The longstanding effort to keep extremist forces out of government in Europe is officially over. For decades, political parties of all kinds joined forces to keep the hard-right far from the levers of power. Today, this strategy — known in France as a cordon sanitaire (or firewall) — is falling apart, as populist and nationalist parties grow in strength across the Continent. Six EU countries — Italy, Finland, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and the Czech Republic — have hard-right parties in government. In Sweden, the survival of the executive relies on a confidence and supply agreement with the nationalist Sweden Democrats, the second-largest force in parliament. In the Netherlands, the anti-Islamic firebrand Geert Wilders is on the verge of power, having sealed a historic deal to form the most right-wing government in recent Dutch history Meanwhile, hard-right parties are dominating the polls across much of Europe. In France, far-right leader Marine Le Pen’s National Rally is cruising at over 30 percent, far ahead of President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party, according to POLITICO’s Poll of Polls. Across the Rhine, Alternative for Germany, a party under police surveillance for its extremist views, is polling second, head-to-head with the Social Democrats. As we approach next month’s European Parliament election, these parties may use their momentum to form a powerful political bloc — if they can maintain their unity. www.politico.eu/article/mapped-europe-far-right-government-power-politics-eu-italy-finalnd-hungary-parties-elections-polling/What did the unelected presidents and commissioners expect? You can ignore some of the people some of the time, but if you ignore the majority of people all the time you must expect consequences. This is the problem with the unelected Brussels elite, they are arrogant, they look down their nose at anyone who disagrees with their globalist agenda, and dismiss them as 'far right extremists'. Well now, hopefully, their pigeons are comming home to roost.

The EU has one single MAJOR problem.
On core issues it is institutionally ideologically opposed to the views of the various electorates.
The EU has never managed to overcome this democratic deficit; and I doubt it ever will.

Unfortunately the democratic deficit, as real as it is, is something Europhiles have always vociferously refused to accept. And as long as the EU have useful idiots, nothing will change. But I think the unelected presidents and commissioners are more aware than ever that many of those useful idiots are waking up, certainly in Europe.

All The Best Well I and tens of millions of Europeans are going to the polls on Sunday to elect our régional MEP's. How else would you suggest we elect our representatives?

What makes you think that the populist forces gaining in popularity on the continent wish to dismantle the EU? That is not a feature in any of their manifestos.
A more likely outcome is that they will combine forces to stimulate reform, something that the UK was never able to do because it lacked allies who felt the same way and so took the easy route out.

I see that the Islamists have had two terrorist attacks against AfD politicians in Germany in the past week. In the first an Afghani and a Police Officer were killed. This political violence might be OK in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but we don't want it in the West. We like polite and peaceful elections.

The EU has two major flaws - 1) It is intent on expanding its empire (which has caused the war in Ukraine) and 2) It is keen on making Europe border free (which has led to Europe being overrun by very unwelcome immigrants from the Middle East). These flaws will eventually destroy Europe.
I thought it was amusing that Macron (at the D-Day ceremonies) thanked Britain for our part in saving them from German invasion. It's long overdue but it was good to hear it anyway. But at the same time Macron is trying to solve his problem with muslim invasion from the Middle East by sending them all to England.
Britain and Europe are facing an existential crisis because of illegal immigration from muslim nations and the reaction is to turn to more Right wing parties.
BTW Mishal Hussein was interviewing Farage on Today a couple of days ago and she brought up the topic of muslims, which surprised me. Farage was straight with her. He pointed out that in a recent poll of UK muslim opinion 25% of muslims said they were in favour of armed "jihad". Farage said that this was a serious problem. Unfortunately Ms Hussein didn't respond. This could get interesting. I suspect that Farage will be asked about this subject - as the Leftie BBC interviewers try to provoke Farage into making some injudicious remark. Thi topic is a minefield.

As things currently stand in this country, MOST people from the business world, in particular exporters, believe that Brexit was a huge mistake.
EVERY poll conducted on the issue of EU membership over the last 2 years shows a referendum tomorrow would result in rejoining the EU by a wider margin than the result of 2016.
Political parties which have aspirations to rejoin the EU include the Lib Dems, SNP, Plaid, The Green Party and Sin Fein.
In the last two BBC Question Time episodes, business leaders and politicians who have argued the case for rejoining the EU have received rapturous applause from the audiences.
The Number 1 reason why the far right has risen in mainland Europe is because of immigration, not the European Union.
In many instances, people who are pro-EU have voted for the far right solely because of immigration from outside the EU, including refugees and asylum seekers.
There is no huge appetite in Europe to dismantle the EU or to withdraw from the EU

'There is no huge appetite in Europe to dismantle the EU or to withdraw from the EU'
One of the fundamental tenets of the Brexit credo insists that there is, despite an almost complete absence of any evidence. This thread is just a tiny instance of this myth which is a central article of faith for fundamentalist Brexiteers.

There is no huge appetite in Europe to dismantle the EU or to withdraw from the EU 'Most' people from the business world think the TORY brexit was a huge mistake . Well yes Leavers don't like it either ,the mistake was leaving the remainer tories in charge of it . Rejoining the EU isnt on the cards . For a start EVERY poll conducted just says would you rejoin the EU . What it doesn't say is the terms we would be re-joining under which wouldn't be the same as when we left .Its not just going to be forget about it and carry on as you were . Not so sure there would be any wide margins either way , joining the euro would probably be a vote winner for staying out . Left wing audiences at QT are no indication of public feeling nor are votes for minor parties The move to the right in Europe has been well publicised .That it includes the young voters (16 now being the voting age in EU elections) has been a bit of an own goal as they expected that group to be of the left .People across Europe are basically fed up with the invasion of migrants and see the right as the only way to halt it . But I think your right that there is no appetite to dismantle the EU , the people just want a different model of it . One of Nation states and secure external borders is the minimum requirement

The latest poll conducted on this issue was published just a few days ago by Deltapoll (surveyed 31st May - 03 June) and it shows that there is a 17% lead for REJOIN over STAY OUT.
The argument and case for the UK belonging to a united Europe is like a War, the LEAVE supporters won the Referendum Battle, but the war is not over, and at the present time the pro-EU supporters have the upper hand, they are the majority.
Unfortunately for the LEAVE voters, the future is pretty bleak, and things do not bode very well for them
There is a Demographic "Time Bomb" ticking away, younger people are heavily in favour of REJOIN, and the older generation are much more weighted in favour of STAY OUT. Over time the calls to rejoin the European Union are going to get louder, and at some point in the future, their voices will not be ignored.

The unelected commission will simply conform to a parliament full of fascist seig heilers instead of the current one-party drones.
