It’ll be a while before “ any vehicle that can display the same driving safety as a reasonably confident adult driver “. Also reasonably confident drivers cause accidents every day, some of them fatal . Let's hope they work better than predictive text generators. Me too.

Also reasonably confident drivers cause accidents every day, some of them fatal . Which is better: less accidents and deaths with some of those deaths by machine or more deaths and all of them human error? If only that were the choice The reality will be the number of cars damaged passengers injured and killed as a result of actions taken by the human behind the wheel, versus the numbers of same incurred as a result of actions taken by the human at the computer terminal, and their profit focussed management tree. Add to that the basic disregard for life endemic in at least one country where such vehicles will be rolled off at a cost that disregards safety testing because of said disregard and you can be sure my parting gift to my children will be the lnowledge of how to hack those AI systems and restore full manual until the time comes for the MOT

It's bad practice to measure others by looking at ourselves. China's trains are operated by computer and they arrive to the second and do not fuck up.

Yes I thought you would find some American propaganda featuring that one. It was the early days of HS rail and they were trying new stuff out. They run fine now.

A train moving in rails from one station to another and a car moving through country lanes on a rainy night are two completely different things.

Like I say it is really fuck all. Sure you will get a few accidents, but one was a mud slide, one was vandalism and one was not even a train but a subway. Remember China is 21 times the population of the UK, so for a country that large they are as near as damn it perfect in terms of reliability.

It's bad practice to measure others by looking at ourselves. China's trains are operated by computer and they arrive to the second and do not fuck up. Only because a british freelance tester discovered the flaw in their system that allowed the automated train operation software to override the automated train protection system and roll a train out of the unprotected sidings onto the main line. And they only knew to test it because they were standing next to ME in Chippenham when i ran the same test on the same feature in the BRITISH software developed for TfL (then called London Underground Limited) for the Docklands Light Railway unmanned train system back in what was it now about 1994 or thereabouts. It was quite entertaining to get the ‘you’ll never believe what i just found’ email from them a few years back (sent from the airport in Thailand they just landed at to enjoy the loot from the job) The difference between the UK and China being of course had that guy NOT been there and done that, and China had a ‘Ladbroke Grove’ moment, NO ONE would ever have found out
