People aren’t turning their backs on the Tories because they are too right wing.. They are turning on the Tories because their rhetoric doesn’t match their actions . Or they are turning their backs on them because after 14 years of Tory government the country is an absolute state and they seem utterly clueless and out of touch?

That’s usually what happens when actions doesn’t match rhetoric. No government will tell us that they will be indecisive and rudderless…then surprise us by being decisive and focused.

So we agree that people are turning their backs on the Tories because they appear to be useless?

People aren’t turning their backs on the Tories because they are too right wing.. They are turning on the Tories because their rhetoric doesn’t match their actions . Traditional Tory voters are turning their backs on this government and Sunak because they're not right wing enough. Tory voters want something we havent had in decades, a traditional centre right Conservative government, and after five years of Labour I think they will get their wish.

They are turning their backs on them because they are not Conservatives.. There's your problem right there, the Tories talking to each other. I suspect that if they'd spent the same amount of energy, time and focus on the cost of living crisis than they appear to have done on small boats and Rwanda they'd be doing a lot better electorally and in the polls.

How so? - if the number one issue for Tory voters is immigration then fixating on the price of potatoes is not going to convince people to vote for the party.

It's not just traditional Tory voters you need to appeal to to win elections.

They are not anything . They are political shift shapers. It’s not how right wing they are , it’s that they never achieve anything to demonstrate anything they say they believe in . The Tories have spent years of damage limitation and infighting, trying to convince us that they stand for centre right values , while not managing to achieve anything that reflects that.

It's not just traditional Tory voters you need to appeal to to win elections. But the missing Tory voters are not supporting someone else - they are sitting at home on their hands. The current policy of trying to be a New Labour tribute act is not working out very well for them. Go back to espousing (and implementing) conservative policies and they will regain the support that made them the most successful political party in the last 100 years.

Proper centre right Tories have been hounded out by the centrists, the moderates, the lukewarms. Although I suspect in an attempt to save his own skin Sunak may become far more Conservative over the next few months. Too little too late? Probably, we'll see.
