This is not news in Britain of course.
It turns out the Soviet Union was at one time friends of Blighty. Why do you think we fish in the Bering Sea and none of the Europeans do? It turns out fishing rights were a present to Blighty going way back in the past. All this time later the offer to the UK to be permitted to fish in Russian waters was kept going. Even when we were sanctioning President Putin, the free offer was kept open, but now it has been withdrawn. This was a major supply of cod and Haddock. The European waters are shared by the Europeans, but we had this vast area to ourselves, which explains why fish and chips became a national icon.
I guess our national papers find this story as little embarrassing, especially Mail/Express/Times/Telegraph, all warmongering bastards who hate Russians, but did not realise we depend on them for our fish and chips.

Its not news because its not news .The UK imports Cod and haddock in much greater volumes from Iceland China and Norway than it does from Russia .With falling sales due to other costs we don't need as much as we did anyway so the Russians fish will hardly be noticed if it is at all .
Fish and chips became a national icon because it was protected during the world wars and not subject to rationing .It was also a cheap food source which is no longer the case . So yes we may be saying goodbye to fish and chips and it may have something to do with the Russians but its not the supply of Cod but the cost of cooking oil

I've been checking the figures. It seems most of our fish come from UK waters, about 2/3 of that amount from EU and much less from other counties, but I could not be sure what was included in other countries. These are some figures from wiki on the Bering Sea.

You do post some bollocks BVL.....Cod has been scarce on the menu for years long before brexit etc......The fucking Russians used to come into our waters and vacuume them empty with their super trawlers and then take them to the waiting Rusky factory ships moored more than 3 miles from our shores....Oh And BTW we had cod and Chips and Haddock and chips last Friday...

Who owns UK fishing rights?
It is known that foreign ownership of fishing rights is widespread – at a conservative estimate, around 20 per cent of English and Welsh fishing rights are owned by a handful of Spanish, Dutch and Icelandic companies, although this number could be higher. Why the fuck do they own any part of our waters FFS?

With cod and chips costing anywhere from £9 to £11.50 round here, it's less costly to get our takeaway protein from chicken, Chinese, Indian or kebab sellers. Mind you, Junior and the Roti Stop offer good value too...

I don't even think it would be legal to sell off parts of UK waters to foreigners , how the fuck can you sell off parts of your rivers, seas and oceans, who's making all this nonsense up?

At least settling on Mars isn't likely to become a reality, especially if we completely bugger up the planet we're living on.
Though, we may learn how to counter the problems we're causing — in which case it will be useful knowledge to take with us...

That's because you've mixed up the fishing rights with ownership. The only one who owns every body of water is mother nature, and she doesn't sign contracts or treaties with anyone.
