£31 in the Mayfair Chippy. But we're N16, not W1... Most of the chippys down here are serving fish that was only landed a few hours prior to lunch time..

Those were the days when the fish was already coocked and kept warm in the glass counters along with the chips...And of course now we cannot have our chips in newspaper any longer thanks to the EUSSR's H&S bullshit...

Small cod, chips and mushy peas £8.90 where I live. There doesn't ever seem to be any shortage of fish. Small cod is actually more than enough for most, large cod is a whale.

Who owns UK fishing rights?
It is known that foreign ownership of fishing rights is widespread – at a conservative estimate, around 20 per cent of English and Welsh fishing rights are owned by a handful of Spanish, Dutch and Icelandic companies, although this number could be higher. Why the fuck do they own any part of our waters FFS? unearthed.greenpeace.org/2019/03/07/fishing-brexit-uk-fleetwood/amp/Much as i fucking hate to use anything the bastards at greenpeace come up with, the facts are all here … It is not the sea that they own It is the quota When the cod war ended badly for us, trawlers in Fleetwood, Grimsby and a dozen other places were tird up and their crews put on the dole. Owners held out for government compo that never came. Membership of the EEC brought a change of approach to who can fish where. We had a quota, and our ship owners sold it to other countries, or rather, other rich bastards in other countries, whose ships fished our waters and took the plunder for themselves.

We had a quota, and our ship owners sold it to other countries, or rather, other rich bastards in other countries, whose ships fished our waters and took the plunder for themselves. The Candians had a 7 year moratorium where they paid their cod fleet to remane in port for the cod stocks to recover. But the EUSSR had other ideas and sent the spanish fleet to plunder canadian waters. They were soon turned back by UK and Canadian gunboats...I do wish these pro EUSSR lovies would do a bit of research before making total tits of them selves....I remember it well and in Brixham there were more red and white maple leaf flags flying than there were the flag of St George or the union Jack...
Collapse of the Atlantic northwest cod fishery.......

In 1970 Cod n Chips cost 25p . That with inflation is about £4.80 today . The once affordable family meal is basically twice what it should be . I don't buy it anymore myself ,its not even the same quality as it was a few years back and nowhere near what it was like when they used beef dripping in the fryers .

I get your point, - Looking on the bright side, in 1970 I was earning £364 per annum and now as a couple we are getting about 100 times that, so if the fish and chips is less than £25 we'll still be smiling.

I think it fair to say around that time ‘fish and chips’ was unheard of in the home, grandma would wander down to the fishmonger a little way from where the huge flyover at heath hospital in cardiff is now, and would buy raw cod or haddock and poach it in milk, served with buttery mash, peas and parsley sauce

Less than half the fishing quotas negotiated by the UK for 2024 are in line with scientific advice for conserving stocks, the Government’s own assessment finds. The sustainability of limits for fish catches negotiated by the UK with the EU and other countries such as Norway for this year has been assessed by the Government’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas).

Strange, I live in a fishing port where men, including my own family have fished out of for generations, and I have never heard of any vessel going as far as the Bering Sea, as far as I can recall a tiny handfull of deep sea trawlers from the larger ports used to fish there.
From Fraserburgh to Aberdeen, from Whitby, Yarmouth Towns the fleets away at the break of day, to the Northern minch and the Norway deeps, and the banks and holes for the North Sea shoals, and off to the Yarmouth quay.
The biggest proportion of Cod sold in UK fish & chip shops comes from the waters around Iceland, and whilst some is caught by British vessels, a lot is caught by Icelandic vessels and imported.
