almost as good as our performance against the US! I think southgate was summed up as a manager when england struggled to a draw with scotland in london. He feared losing more than he wanted to win.
That is southgate. His football career as player and manager is versed in failure after failure. Missing penaltys. Losing captain for middlesborough in uefa final when sevilla humped them 4 nil. Losing the euroes.
Still , he is very good at bending the knee...
I'm no fan of Southgate Balmy. Yet, his negative safe-guard approach still condemns the jocks to irrelevance. You go and cheer on the French for cattle-tick reasons, you've nobody else to support - that chip on your shoulder ensures England live rent free in scottish heads. |

I've already admitted to being defeated worse than the English at Stirling Bridge. If you could impart some of your knowledge about the Braveheart myth myth I may even come to Wallace's defense in future. You've obviously fought this battle many times before. What are the usual arguments made by his detractors and how do you counter them? You may be able save me the trouble of finding the works of Geoffrey Barrow and reading them. i dont think i could summarise barrows work in a post or even a thread on this or any other forum. I can only suggest reading up on him.
What im challenging is the myth that braveheart was all bollocks and thus must be dismissed as holly wood fantasy. Much of it is based on truth , other parts like princess isabella fantasy.
If you think if it as warring french nobles on both sides using saxon gael and welshmen as cannon fodder in their internal fighting , with flemish and bretons thrown into the mix for good measure , you will get part of the picture.
Scotland had been a nation since probably the 9th century , ,some 450 years before the events depicted , but plantaganets attempts to takes scotland into his kingdom merely reinforced the growing sense of scottish identity and nationhood.
The basic picture the film presented are based on historical fact .
A person not wise enough to realise he's out of his depth might counter with... The main premise of the film was that Braveheart was a champion for the ''Freedom'' of the poor downtrodden Scottish people when in fact he was a minor noble with a keen military mind hoping to advance his position all the way up to King of Scotland. Caring little for the blood of his countrymen that he was prepared to spill in the name of his personal ambition. A point reinforced by Robert the Bruce's later betrayal of him since he saw him as a danger to his own ambitions. He might also add that the lessons Wallace taught the Plantagenet Kings about the value of fighting dismounted and from a pre-prepared defensive position did the English a solid favour in their upcoming hundred year war battles against the noblemen of France. This knowledge applied along with the great respect earned for the Welsh longbow in the Norman advance into Wales was to ensure English victories all the way from Crecy to Agincourt and beyond. Thus proving that the combined skills of all the British people make them a force able to take on and defeat the world and division can only weaken us. God save the King. |
