Im a celtic fan , and i havent ever supported rangers in any competition in my life. All i can say is you cant be a serious football supporter in my opinion , if you believe bitter rivals supporters will root for each other in footballing competitions.
You are free however to support whoever you wish in the world cup , as am i ,and moray , and i dont and wont be supporting your country.
I support fellow european teams in world competitions , and my support is going to France , as my country isnt at the world cup.
That's the problem with Scots. They think of England as bitter rivals. look at this thread as an example. Unprompted , on a scottish section of this political forum , an englishman starts a thread talking obsessively about my country scotland. Others are desperate for us to hold Englands hands.
The thread buccy speaks for itself and reveals the chip on the english mans shoulders , and of course the obsessive weirdness of needing scottish love and support.
You can do it buccy . Stand tall on your own. You dont need us or anyone else holding your wee hands mate.

Our footballing rivals (not bitter rivals) are on the continent and elsewhere round the world as you can see on the tele at the moment. you have no rivals buccy apart from us and the welsh and irish. The big teams and trophy winners like the French and germans or the other footballing greats are worried about the quality teams , not minnows like England.
Thats how you like it , being the big fish in the small british pond rather than a minnow in the large world ocean.
for the rest of us football fans , you are a figure of ridicule with your knee taking and merely there to make up the numbers at the group stage . You did well though against america.

well there is .I dont speak spanish but i thought thats what the argies call those islands.
What braveheart myth is that then monte? Perhaps we could start a thread on it as history buffs , and you tell me where the myths are ?
oh the colonists? Isnt there a un law on colonials and kangaroo referendums tying them to the motherland?
Once we get indy , we could offer up the argies our 9% share of las malvinas in return for a few favours to be negotiated.
To save time I'll just post your fellow Scott's thoughts on the Braveheart myth. The balls on the man to do this routine in Glasgow, they must be bigger than your debt to GDP ratio. haha

As for the Braveheart myths, I'm pretty sure we had a conversation about it already back on the old site where you went under a different name. Cant ever remember having a conversation with you about it to be honest monte.
Wether or not its a rubbish film is besides the point. Enjoyment of a film , like comedy , is in the eye of the beholder. We were trying to discuss the myth about historical inaccuraccies.
He wasnt mythologised by walter scott. He was mythologised at the court of king james the fourth in the late 15th century by a poet called blind harry. Wallces deeds were written about over much of europe including France.
ok , no rpobelm but may i respectifully suggest once again you , not i , brought braveheart up , and its alleged historical inaccuracies , which so far , amounts to one small minor detail regarding princess isabella.
Fair enough. You are right about the film just being Hollywood and not to be taken as a historical document of any kind. Also, I bow to your greater knowledge about Wallace. I have perhaps been a victim of butthurt English propaganda on the subject. I shall have to do a bit more reading on the subject if I wish to come back at you with some better ammunition.

We don't need your support Tommy. We just mock your small time mentality claiming England as bitter rivals. A small-time nation steeped in a culture of victim mentality needs a nation like England to hate on - it's what keeps you breathing Tommy.

Scotland aren't our rival. You tug on our coat tails like a petulant child demanding attention. You're not even at the world cup. Speaking of which, your performance at home against the Ukraine was something to be proud of wasn't it - almost as good as our performance against the US!

I cant think of any film that was based on some historical episode that was an exact replica of that histrocial period. The bottom line was braveheart was based on historical fact , but had a number of stuff thrown in because at the end of the day it was a hollywood blockbuster designed to make money ,not be an exact historical reenactment.
If you want to understand more on that period of history , read the works of experts like professor geoffrey barrow and many others.
I get why many english people dont like the film. First and foremost it challenges the myth that there has always been a britian , and of course shows the elite in England up in a bad light. Remember though the idea it was scotland v england is simplistic nonsense , and events were as ever much more nuanced than that.

almost as good as our performance against the US! I think southgate was summed up as a manager when england struggled to a draw with scotland in london. He feared losing more than he wanted to win.
That is southgate. His football career as player and manager is versed in failure after failure. Missing penaltys. Losing captain for middlesborough in uefa final when sevilla humped them 4 nil. Losing the euroes.
Still , he is very good at bending the knee...

I've already admitted to being defeated worse than the English at Stirling Bridge. If you could impart some of your knowledge about the Braveheart myth myth I may even come to Wallace's defense in future. You've obviously fought this battle many times before. What are the usual arguments made by his detractors and how do you counter them? You may be able save me the trouble of finding the works of Geoffrey Barrow and reading them.

I can only suggest reading up on him.
What im challenging is the myth that braveheart was all bollocks and thus must be dismissed as holly wood fantasy. Much of it is based on truth , other parts like princess isabella fantasy.
If you think if it as warring french nobles on both sides using saxon gael and welshmen as cannon fodder in their internal fighting , with flemish and bretons thrown into the mix for good measure , you will get part of the picture.
Scotland had been a nation since probably the 9th century , ,some 450 years before the events depicted , but plantaganets attempts to takes scotland into his kingdom merely reinforced the growing sense of scottish identity and nationhood.
The basic picture the film presented are based on historical fact .
