If he really wants a Swiss style relationship with the EU, maybe he could give us a Swiss style say on the matter ?

I think this has been blown out of proportion and has got some people excited and moisty. Sorry to disappoint. Jenrick says 'fundamental tenets' of Brexit deal will not be reopened In his interviews this morning Robert Jenrick, the immigration minister, also ruled out pushing for a Swiss-style deal with the EU. Echoing the firm denial issued by No 10 yesterday, after the Sunday Times story was published (there was no denial ahead of publication), Jenrick told TalkTV: We have a settled position on our relationship with the European Union, that’s the deal that was struck in 2019 and 2020 – and that’s the one that we intend to stick to. That sets out the fundamental position that we don’t want to see a return to free movement, we don’t want to have the jurisdiction of European judges in the UK, and we don’t want to be paying any money to the European Union. Of course there will be things on which we can improve our relationship – trade, security, migration are all key topics, and the prime minister wants to have the most productive relationship possible with our European friends and neighbours. But there’s no question whatsoever of us reopening the fundamental tenets of that deal. And he told Sky News: Money, free movement, jurisdiction of European judges: these are really important things that were discussed at length within the Conservative party, within the country, a few years ago. We chose our position. I think it’s broadly the right one, because we did that for a reason. Does that mean the Sunday Times just got it wrong? No. The report seems to have been inspired by an interview that Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, gave to the Today programme on Friday. He said that the government wanted “unfettered trade” with the EU (a phrase used by Theresa May when she was negotiating her own Brexit deal, which was closer to the Swiss version than Boris Johnson’s) and he said he was confident that “over the years ahead we will find outside the single market we are able to remove the vast majority of the trade barriers that exist between us and the EU”. (Johnson himself denied that his deal did put up non-tariff trade barriers, even though it obviously did.) www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2022/nov/21/brexit-rishi-sunak-swiss-deal-cbi-chief-uk-politics-live-latest-updates?filterKeyEvents=false&page=with:block-637b43ab8f08958e0f819b68#block-637b43ab8f08958e0f819b68

So the CBI haven't been pressurizing for free movement and the reason they advocate someimmigration is that there simply isnt labour available in some sectors -nothing to do with raising wages
Otherwise your post was accurate, Pacifico. Cut out the lies mate.

This is the country that created modern industry. The idea that Brits don't want to work is bollocks. But, not only did we create industry, we also created trade unions and asked to be well paid.
Bad bosses don't like that, bad bosses like cheap labour.

Bad bosses don't like that, bad bosses like cheap labour. Businesses have become hooked on it though by an ideology from Europe.

Bad businesses have. Good businesses never needed to import menial workers.
And the EU is not Europe.

Senior government figures are planning to put Britain on the path towards a Swiss-style relationBrexitwith the European Union. The move, intended to forge closer economic ties, is likely to infuriate hardline Conservative Brexiteers. Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, last week signalled that Rishi Sunak’s administration intends to break from the approach adopted by Boris Johnson and remove the vast majority of trade barriers with the bloc. In private, senior government sources have suggested that pursuing frictionless trade requires moving towards a Swiss-style relationship over the next decade. However, they insist this would not extend to a return to freedom of movement. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-mulls-swiss-style-ties-with-brussels-nr0f7fw2kWith pro EU globalists like Sunak and Hunt in charge it was always going to happen. Perhaps this is the reason they are loathe to upset the EU/Macron over the illegal invasion from France. Sunak voted leave and his everyother vote he voted leave. Hunt on the other hand is a remainer . what your saying red your not happy the way Brexit has gone. Both sunak and hunt has come To the reality that trade barriers with the EU has been a economic disaster. Indeed. Putting up a whole load of new trade barriers, regulations, checks, red tape, increased expense, and delays between ourselves and our nearest and largest trading partners was always going to be economically damaging. To imagine otherwise is economic illiteracy. The Brexiteers simply don't want to admit that obvious fact, but the sharper brains in the government are perhaps realising it. They have a massive political problem though because the more knuckle-dragging mass of their members will be about as enthusiastic for it as they would be for a bucket of sick.

Whether Brexit is seen as a success, or a failure, totally depends on the people in charge, the electorate are irrelevant. It's well known that Sunak and Hunt are pro EU globalists, they will guide policy in that direction while at all times denying it. As Heath did, as Major did as Blair did. The EU was always seen as a career opportunity and a gravy train for MPs, especially for those who failed in Westminster. We don't need the EU for that. We have the House of Lords doing us proud in that role.

The blob have been busy, initially they had the HoL and Bercow trying to derail it all, then somehow or other Boris did actually get us sort of out, "they" then did every trick in the book to get rid of Boris (quite easy due to his carrying on), then dumped Liz Truss. "They" then installed Hunt in charge with Sunak as PM in order to overturn Brexit and get back the status quo. The only way this is going to be resolved is by voting in Reform UK, I know they have no experience of Government, but they really can't be worse than what we have. I can see that the ERG and other Brexit supporting MPs getting together and bringing the Government down if this carries on. Labour might be gearing up for an election, we understand the Deputy Leader has borrowed money to enhance her bosom and Starmer has taken to applying more brylcreem than the entire RAF, but their lack of any policies must be noted even by the most myopic lefties. I hope this spectacularly backfires on the Tories They sound perfect. If Reform is the answer, you are surely asking the wrong question.

There are a few problems with trying to adopt the Swiss style agreement. Firstly it's not on offer by the EU - they don't like it and are almost permanently trying to bully Switzerland into changing it. And the bilateral deals that Switzerland has took over 6 years to negotiate. Secondly if the problem we're trying to solve is "friction" in trade it will NOT solve it. The friction is because we've left the Single Market and now trade as a "third party country". But so does Switzerland, who's also not in the Single Market. This is all like a time warp where we go back to 2016 and start going over all the old arguments where no one has a clue what they're talking about. WHat's basically happening is the "Revenge of the Remoaners". All the fuss about Boris was to remove him so that they could install their own PM and chancellor (not voted for the people but by MPs who are 75% remain). That's been achieved, completely illegitimately. They now want to reverse Brexit. I said this would happen if Boris was ousted. This was always going to happen. MSM has gone into overdrive ever since 2016 about ousting any politician that is sympathetic to the democratic vote of 2016. Most of the Tory newsprint media was solidly pro-Brexit, and still can't break the habit of blaming the EU for everything.

(According to May ) Wages are set by the availability of workers not how well the general economy is doing - if you increase competition for jobs then wages will fall, just as the CBI wants.

What is your solution to the major labour shortages that many sectors are currently suffering?

Most of the Tory newsprint media was solidly pro-Brexit, and still can't break the habit of blaming the EU for everything. No need to get partisan, 60% of Labour constituencies voted leave. Democratic decision. We're all in this together. If you want a Swiss style relationship with it, lets have a Swiss style vote on the matter.
