Ed Miliband ‘to support Labour ditching flagship £28bn green pledge’ following speculation he could resign Sir Keir is expected to announce that Labour is dropping its staple £28 billion environmental policy on Thursday. Shadow climate secretary Ed Miliband is expected to rally behind the U-turn despite initial speculation he could resign over the move, The Telegraph reports. Mr Milband was a key figure behind by the flagship policy, which had originally been criticised by the Tories for being unaffordable. Reacting to the planned U-turn, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt hit out at the Labour party, as he wrote on X: “After four years of Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership it seems like Labour’s only economic plan is to copy the Conservatives. “But if their policies flipflop like this in opposition, what sort of chaos would the British people have to endure if they got into power?” While Tory MP Simon Clarke wrote “Chaos with Ed Miliband”, referencing a tweet made by former PM David Cameron in 2015 about the shadow climate secretary www.lbc.co.uk/news/ed-miliband-to-back-labour-green-pledge-u-turn-keir-starmer/

These are Eds green principles , and if you dont like them ....he has others....... Honestly , Starmers labour party are a comedy side show. There can't be a single policy or principle left in starmers new labour that hasn't been u turned on or completely ditched. With these daily announcements , the public are seeing this is a man who cannot be trusted on a single thing he says. Whats announced today , will be gone by this time tomorrow. How could anyone vote for a party like that?

Labour, if elected, will be constrained in what it wants to do by the economic mess bequeathed to them by this appalling government. Perhaps things by election time will look better than they do now, perhaps worse. Its good that our prospective government, perhaps six-eight months out from taking over are being realistic about what they can now do.

I'm not sure how you know this because they've not even got near to the tiller and all I see from Starmer, Reeves and Co is

You mean they'll be constrained by the same economic factors that currently constrain the Tories.
Why not just be honest and say that?

The £28 Billion plan was first announced three years ago at a time when borrowing costs were at an almost all time low, and since that time interest rates have moved steadily in only one direction, upwards.
It was probably a mistake for Keir Starmer to announce the plan so far back from an election, not knowing what might happen to interest rates, the economy, growth, the state of the countries finances and what the priorities might be when the election comes.
However, the Conservatives now cannot claim that a Keir Starmer government would get the economy into trouble by borrowing what we cannot afford.
