i know that. Carter vickers is at celtic , and he is a good player. That doesnt change the fact the yanks are a poor team from an extremely poor footballing qualifying region who had they played off against european teams like italy or whoever wouldnt be there.
They won one game and drew two in one of the weakest groups . i dont think they are improving , their record in this world cup is worse than others.
I just noticed an error in my post. I meant to say they need a better home league not team. I think the septics are getting better. I probably won't see one of the also rans lift the cup in my lifetime but given enough encouragement the WC won't always be won by a team from the Old Guard. We already have the Euros and Copa America if you want to see best pitted against best and never any big upsets like we have seen recently with the early bath for a few of the ''greats''. come on monte. The yank "soccer " league is the retirement home for european players in their forties.
The yanks are only allegedly good becasue england struggled to a draw with them. I think it says more about how poor southgates team are than how good an inferior soccer team from yankland is.
I suspect the spanish would have put 5 past them.

How do you justify 4 CONCACAF teams participating ?
It's impossible to justify it but you can explain it, just as you can explain almost everything wrong with FIFA.
It's as Brian Glanville wrote in the Sunday Times after the ousting of Stanley Rous as Fifa President, to be replaced by Joao Havelange in 1974: "It's the pressing of small brown envelopes into large brown hands".

It's a curious thing but Anglophone countries with the possible exception of England are totally crap at playing football aka 'soccer'. Any theories why that might be? because it's a false story you made up perchance? www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men?dateId=id13792 England 5th USA 16th Wales 19th Australia 38th Scotland 40th Canada 41st Ireland 49th So all in the top quartile

I think the idea is to spread the beautiful game to places around the world not yet convinced that it is our greatest gift to them. It seems to be working rather well and the gap between the Europeans and South Americans and the also rans does seem to be closing. ...and I do mean us, the English may have been the first to play a game with the name football but I have been recently informed by a gloating German that it was actually the Scotch who first codified it some 150 years ago. He has less to gloat about now of course as his team are safely back home eating bratwurst and sauerKraut. Oh I must use that next time I speak to him sour Kraut indeed. Im mystified how you can tell the gap is closing between the europeans/south americans and others. Now while i would be the first to admit the south koreans and japanese are doing good and have some decent players , i stand by all i have said.
How do you justify 4 CONCACAF teams participating ? Even the africans and asians have far far harder qualifying criteria than CONCACAF.
Two world cups in a row costa rica have been humiliated on the football pitch.
It demeans thw whole competition , wehre we are now focusing on the politically correct message of making sure all four corners of the globe are represented to make up the numbers rather than quality on the pitch.
Argentina didnt get out of second gear against australia , and messi , almost as old as you and i , was the best player still on the pitch and at this tournament by a country mile.
By the next round , i suspect barring a mishap the quarters will be exclusively filled by european and south american teams as normal.
I dont think the non south american and european regions are improving that much.
As for ze germuns..........what can you say? How the mighty have fallen. ! worst german team in world cup history.
As for who invented the game monte , i dont get involved in petty bickering. We scots merely whisper our never ending list of inventions , we dont need to brag about it.
First of all globes don't have corners. Much like with white people and convenience stores if you listen to a few of the bitter Brit-nats. Don't they teach geometry north of the wall? Secondly I don't doubt that FIFA and brown envelopes has something to do with central and north Americans getting to the finals and Italy failing for the second time in a row. But like I said, spreading the beautiful game to places that won't play a little rough and tumble without full body armour or who think hockey should be played on frozen ponds can only be a good thing for the game. Thirdly, just because I know you love hearing about him, Edward I banned football back in the late 13th century because people weren't practising their archery skills enough. I'm sure you knew that already but I just love mentioning his name in our lovely little chats.

Actually we call it served at just the right temperature to taste all the subtleties of flavour that distinguish it from that over chilled tasteless piss water the Krauts came up with and called lager. Monte , the germans brew the best beer on the planet mate. As you englanders are fellow germanics , i would thought you could refine your brewing beyond warm ale on the village lawn after cricket.
The geordies drink that chemical mix of newkie brown , and the mancs are never off the toilet duck. The southern english spend their time quaffing imported wine and wishing they were as refined as the French.
You arent known for your culinary sophistication and fine alcohol are you? jellied eels and warm bitter dont really cut the mustard mate.
Well jellied eels are almost entirely for cockneys. The rest of us aren't keen at all. Apart from their amusing rhyming slang they've never done much to advance the culture. Not as much as you sweaty socks have nae doubt.

For someone who has no skin in this game you certainly are very vociferous about who you believe deserves to be at the WC. Does it all boil down to envy and bitterness that the likes of Costa Rica et al qualified and your own team didn't?

If you believe in the accuracy of the FIFA world rankings I've got some swampland in Florida I'd like to talk to you about.
Eight of the teams in the first decile have already been sent home, and two others never even qualified including sixth-ranked Italy. Some ranking scheme eh.

Do keep digging, it does amuse to see how some are so ignorant about the British national game. Italy didn't qualify because they didn't deserve to. They were worse than Switzerland in their group and then lost at home to North Macedonia

These are random matches. France would beat Poland four times out of five. Poland hopes today is the fifth time.

I suppose I should want Poland to get a lucky win against France here. It's a shame we have to meet them in the quarter final really but if we are going to lift the cup we will have to beat them at some point.

Costa rica didnt qualify. Qualify suggest competing in regional rounds to get to the world cup finals . costa rica were given a bye from a concacaf region that is made up of 41 member states of which 35 are desert islands and tax havens. Footballing giants like the cayman islands and barbados are among the presidents of the association ffs.
Still i suppose the bigger amount of lesser teams from footballing backwaters that get there , the more chance it gives little englandshire.

Brit nats just don't have the same sense of humour. I might have to switch sides. Has anyone got a spare skirt and some blue face paint I can borrow?

I believe in Argentina. They have already had their inevitable bad match at a point where they could afford it.
However, Brazil has a red carpet rolled out for them to the semifinals. They should eat South Korea for breakfast and difficult to believe that the winner of Japan-Croatia is going to give them trouble.
