Leave Kane on the bench. He's past it. Bring him on as a sub if they getwhats desperate later. Thats why I said maybe for kane who would you play up front instead of him or would you go for a two field attack. Whats happend to the new wonder boy Grealess he had so much promise Congrats on becoming a legend. Is the lovely avatar a present to yourself. That's going to go down really well, she's such a popular figure with some of the boys . I don't really know who I would put in his place but apart from one lovely pass to set up a goal from Rashford (I think) I haven't really seen him do much. He's going to be shown up by France if we get past Senegal today.

come now lets be sensible and reasonable. The usa doesnt take football , what they call soccer , seriously , perhaps a bit more serious than they used to to be fair.
If they did , as the worlds foremost economic and military superpower of some 330 million souls inhabiting a country with states bigger than the netherlands or even the yookay , they could possibly be world beaters.
My point is this isnt some sporting backwater struggling to compete against a european team . On the flip side though , they are currently a workmanlike team and performance without having the quality of the european teams.
Generally the knockout stages sort the wheat from the chaff
Yea I agree Thomas but It was nice to see the yanks and canaddian teams there .it should make for a intrerting 2026 world cup . when them nations hold it. Eh? We are supposed to be watching the best nations in the world compete at football , and this tournament like the last is anything but.
My overbearing sense at this world cup is the stench of corruption. While people focus on Qatar being the hosts and all the politics and human rights issues behind it , another question i want to ask is why are so many teams from north/central America....CONCACAF , that s the USA , Canada , Mexico and Costa rica , participating?
Canada won their derby game against the eskimoes of the north pole 55 - 0 , while costa rica survived a late comeback by the corn islands to win 66 - 1 . The corn islands are inhabited by two people and a crocodile.
Surely one team from CONCACAF should have qualified , and the runner up went into a play off against a european or south american team?
The proof is in the pudding. 3 of the 4 got knocked out in the group stages , and the other as expected out in the first knock out stage.
Was one of theose nice american men with a brown envelope full of dollars , and a bit of a political and economic threat breathing down infantinos throat or something?

A lot of the USA team now play in Europe. They aren't too short of high quality players these days. What they are really short of is a quality home team and a larger percent of the population who GAF. All in all not a bad show to get out of the group stages. The gap is closing. Only 2 south American teams in the knockout stage. The others must be embarrassed that the US did what they couldn't. i know that. Carter vickers is at celtic , and he is a good player. That doesnt change the fact the yanks are a poor team from an extremely poor footballing qualifying region who had they played off against european teams like italy or whoever wouldnt be there.
They won one game and drew two in one of the weakest groups . i dont think they are improving , their record in this world cup is worse than others.

LMFAO. English whiskey? hope its better than that pish you call warm ale. Actually we call it served at just the right temperature to taste all the subtleties of flavour that distinguish it from that over chilled tasteless piss water the Krauts came up with and called lager. Monte , the germans brew the best beer on the planet mate. As you englanders are fellow germanics , i would thought you could refine your brewing beyond warm ale on the village lawn after cricket.
The geordies drink that chemical mix of newkie brown , and the mancs are never off the toilet duck. The southern english spend their time quaffing imported wine and wishing they were as refined as the French.
You arent known for your culinary sophistication and fine alcohol are you? jellied eels and warm bitter dont really cut the mustard mate.

Quite a match for the last 30 minutes, all a bit unambitious the first hour Glad I slept through it then. Argentina didn't look that impressive though. Only 2-1 against a nation that thinks footie is a game for poofters. i think the argies took the foot off the gas at 2 nil. The aussies are a better team than the yanks though. Again , how does a country that regualrly qualifies by beating the tongan islands 100 nil manage to get to the world cup though?

To be fair , england must be clear favourites.

I think the idea is to spread the beautiful game to places around the world not yet convinced that it is our greatest gift to them. It seems to be working rather well and the gap between the Europeans and South Americans and the also rans does seem to be closing. ...and I do mean us, the English may have been the first to play a game with the name football but I have been recently informed by a gloating German that it was actually the Scotch who first codified it some 150 years ago. He has less to gloat about now of course as his team are safely back home eating bratwurst and sauerKraut. Oh I must use that next time I speak to him sour Kraut indeed.

It's a curious thing but Anglophone countries with the possible exception of England are totally crap at playing football aka 'soccer'. Any theories why that might be? Yep. The British empire old boy. My thoughts. The empire's leaders and administrators all went to certain schools, those schools had rugby and cricket no football. It was the same domestically just that football was the working class preference. So in the Anglosphere outside of US and UK where civilisation was slowly growing they played rugby and cricket through the school system and this was publicised through via a compliant media to gain more followers. Eventually due to UK business seeing market opportunities with football having a larger following the money started to influence reporting and so the football clubs started to grow. TV came along and this was another way to earn revenue. Now the other Anglosphere were slower to adapt as information and customs were being shared out from the centre outwards. Meanwhile n Australia they developed Aussie Rules football, Rugby was for the special schools, Aussie Rules football for the working classes. Football or Soccer had to compete with Aussie Rules football. Just looked the lat AFL final has 100,000 spectators that is bigger than any UK football stadium. So soccer is competing with this. In the US they went their own way with Baseball and the NFL I think they only changed because of seeing the money aspect of the World Cup, market economics. NZ smaller cities and more isolated and they oddly taught rugby and mainstream schools and also at Maori Schools. I would say again only global popularity of football / soccer changed that. Canada - not so sure about, school system again though consider the harsher climate pushing snow activities probably delayed soccer taking hold and also the influence of the geographically closer US and their sports.

I just noticed an error in my post. I meant to say they need a better home league not team. I think the septics are getting better. I probably won't see one of the also rans lift the cup in my lifetime but given enough encouragement the WC won't always be won by a team from the Old Guard. We already have the Euros and Copa America if you want to see best pitted against best and never any big upsets like we have seen recently with the early bath for a few of the ''greats''.

Im mystified how you can tell the gap is closing between the europeans/south americans and others. Now while i would be the first to admit the south koreans and japanese are doing good and have some decent players , i stand by all i have said.
How do you justify 4 CONCACAF teams participating ? Even the africans and asians have far far harder qualifying criteria than CONCACAF.
Two world cups in a row costa rica have been humiliated on the football pitch.
It demeans thw whole competition , wehre we are now focusing on the politically correct message of making sure all four corners of the globe are represented to make up the numbers rather than quality on the pitch.
Argentina didnt get out of second gear against australia , and messi , almost as old as you and i , was the best player still on the pitch and at this tournament by a country mile.
By the next round , i suspect barring a mishap the quarters will be exclusively filled by european and south american teams as normal.
I dont think the non south american and european regions are improving that much.
As for ze germuns..........what can you say? How the mighty have fallen. ! worst german team in world cup history.
As for who invented the game monte , i dont get involved in petty bickering. We scots merely whisper our never ending list of inventions , we dont need to brag about it.
