The Department for Education had identified 572 schools by May this year which might contain Raac, and work was under way to ensure measures were in place for pupils and staff. The collapse of a single beam at one school prompted the safety alert. Schools minister Nick Gibb told BBC Radio 4 Today programme: “A beam that had no sign that it was a critical risk and was thought to be safe collapsed.” There were also other incidents of the ageing material failing without warning. Has the government mishandled the crisis? Ministers will be challenged over whether they should have acted more quickly to assess the scale of the problem in schools. The risk from structural failures in Raac, which was widely used from the 1950s to the 1980s, has been known for more than three decades. |
