I remember watching a programme about this Post Office Horizon scandal a couple of years ago, ex postmasters in tears talking about losing their life savings, their homes, their friends and reputations and being sent to prison, 700 of them. You would have to be pretty hard nosed not to be moved. We all know legal wheels move slowly but as you say, people at the top must have known about this for years. I think any talk of stripping Vennells of her CBE is trivial, she should be investigated with a view to prosecution imo. She was in charge, the buck stops on her desk. Stuff is moving forward as we speak now. A police criminal investigation has just started with two people so far interviewed under caution. About time too.

Imo that’s the right way to go . Honours are only ‘ gongs for the boys ‘ anyway. As an aside , everyone and their dog knew about this ‘ scandal’ for a number of years . I have no doubt that every MP , Lord or anyone with political influence knew as well but it’s taken an ITV ( note ..not BBC) television programme to bring the whole filthy mess into the public gaze . Only now ( bar one or two)are politicians falling over themselves to offer solutions . Well I hear today the petition to remove her CBE is now 500 000 strong. The TV series has boosted signatures from a very low number that it was before the programme, demonstrating how many were kept in the dark, even in today's world of 24hr News. The petition I linked to now has over 700,000 signatories. The goal has now been extended to get 800,000. Despite the unanimous anger and disgust at what the PO did to those men and women, not one of you has mentioned that you have signed the petition. There is another petition on the go, through Change.org, that is calling for accountability and compensation Here's the link: www.change.org/p/biztradegovuk-post-office-scandal-full-compensation-and-accountability?source_location=topic_pageIt started in January 2020 but is still live as the figure has risen since I first checked it out. The TV series obviously has had an impact.

Stuff is moving forward as we speak now. A police criminal investigation has just started with two people so far interviewed under caution. About time too. According to the press the police investigation started in 2020 , about time they got their fingers out and did something Scotland Yard said on Friday evening that officers are “investigating potential fraud offences arising out of these prosecutions”, for example “monies recovered from sub-postmasters as a result of prosecutions or civil actions”. The Met has already been looking into potential offences of perjury and perverting the course of justice in relation to investigations and prosecutions carried out by the Post Office. Two people have been interviewed under caution but nobody has been arrested since the investigation was launched in January 2020.

Sir Ed Davey appears to be in a lot of trouble. He collected £275k for a tiny bit of work for the law firm of the prosecution side.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/01/06/police-investigate-post-office-horizon-scandal/Yes well they have two type of investigation: one that does not see any investigation and one that does. The latter may well be the case now. The trouble is corruption spreads across the state system, from corporations, police, judiciary and political parties. No one feeding off that system wants to rock the boat. Indeed I'm surprised ITV decided to rock the boat.

I've just watched this documentary with my wife and we both got pretty angry watching it. I've since signed the petition. Paula Vennell's incompetence takes some beating.

Baseless assumptions without a shred of evidence are just idiotic. It is just as likely with her behaviour that she is a Tory. It was a Tory government after all that gave her the honour. And it is another Tory government refusing to take it away. But whatever, judging someone's politics by the way they look is beyond stupid unless their appearance includes a CND badge or some such thing. To be fair, Rachel Reeves said a future Labour government would concentrate on compensation for the victims rather than stripping Vennells of her CBE. Well the Tories have only known about it for 9 years so we can't expect them to get it sorted before they go.

At this point I tend to agree, I doubt anyone will go to prison. But we'll see.

As a matter of fact the Horizon system was not green-lighted by Ms Vennells but by her predecessor, Adam Crozier.
Mr Crozier subsequently became chief executive of ITV and, strangely enough, he does not get a mention in the ITV programme which is creating all the ruckus. He is now the chairman of BT.

Did Mr Crozier leave before the prosecutions started or after?
