I have also posted on these boards that the BBC ( our BBC ) should not be a political football, and instead it ought to be an institution which unites both Left and Right, because the BBC is the best, and its British, we should all be proud of it. An impossibility simply because it is not politically neutral. Because it take sides politically it cannot be a uniting institution. From just last night -

no - but if you claim to be politically neutral you would steer clear of personal attacks on individuals and stick to reporting policy. We saw the same behaviour from Nick Robinson towards Suella Braverman earlier in the week.

Take Q uestion Time, not once in the run up to the referendum did Leave have a majority of panelists - mostr times it was a single pro-Leave panelist who was outgunned by 4 Remain supporters.
By all means the BBC can take a political stance - but dont be in receipt of taxpayer support when you do it.

I'm not completely sure that is what all the GBP want. Apart from a discerning few the great majority seem content with any old dross as long it isn't too taxing and doesn't call for a mental age older than 12. American TV in fact.
An alternative approach could be for the BBC to return to its Reithian roots and principles and offer subscriptions rather than depend on license fee income. It could then retire from the race to the bottom that it is currently engaged in.
I get the impression that right-wingers feel best by insulting people when they find they have no valid argument. It seems that millions of viewers disagree with you. It seems they don't.
Most popular TV programmes week of 20-26/11

I’ve cancelled my license, so the bbc can shove their price hike where the sun doesn’t shine.

Typical Tory mindset
The minority who claim they do not watch the BBC, want to defund an institution which the majority clearly do enjoy, as per all the viewing figure evidence.
Typical Tory mindset
The VALUE of something to those which use a service is not taken account of, only the cost, and the Conservative way is to remove that cost no matter what. This is called "A race to the bottom".
They want us all to watch commercial TV, or pay double what we all pay for the TV licence in order to watch SKY.
I dont have children, why should I pay taxation towards schools ? <----- Selfishness

The usual double standard selfish hypocrite, like he wants us to pay illegal migrants and anything that keeps the lefties happy

If you read what I stated - THE MAJORITY of people clearly enjoy watching the BBC, as per the viewing figures and all the other evidence, this is not about me.
I will always argue in favour of retaining and funding any British institution which is used or enjoyed by the majority, and which is the market leader, despite anything you say.
The BBC is not an issue which relates to Left or Right, I fail to comprehend what could be Left wing about Call The Midwife, Blue Peter, Match Of The Day or Doctor Who.
You spout utter nonsense

99% of people in TV-owning households watched ITV in 2020. Over 18m million viewers watched our main channel each day – and over 37m million each week. This success is driven by the fact that ITV creates content that reflects the UK in all its geographic and social diversity.

I’ve cancelled my license, so the bbc can shove their price hike where the sun doesn’t shine. Welcome to the club. There are thousands who are now deserting the BBC every single day.

It's a simple argument about quality. If you defund the BBC it doesn't mean you get the same high quality output but with adverts. There's a reason you don't get quality programming like Planet Earth on commercial TV. It's just too expensive to produce for a ratings chasing commercial broadcaster to risk.

Most of the quality programming and films are made by independent production companies. Planet Earth was a profitable series for the BBC - they made far more than it cost from overseas sales. There is no reason why they would not be able to do the same if their funding system was different.
