The deputy prime minister Oliver Dowden has said Brits should stock up on candles and battery-powered radios in case war, disaster or another pandemic destroys our gadgets. He suggested people stock up on battery-powered torches and first-aid kits in case communications were to go down. In a visit to Porton Down, the UK’s military laboratory, he described the supplies as ‘analogue capabilities that it makes sense to retain’ in a digital age. Dowden said: If you had a power outage [Which thanks to net-zero is likely] and you wanted to get news, where would you get that news from? link Makes you wonder if Dowden knows something. I have a stock essentials which includes disposable lighters, candles, batteries & tinned food. Sensible precaution.

For the benefit of See2 [Other outraged lefties are available] Net zero will leave UK more vulnerable to power cuts... The UK’s net zero drive will leave it more vulnerable to power cuts caused by storms, the Government has been warned by its infrastructure commission. People could be left sitting in cold homes or unable to charge their cars, while heavy industry could be knocked offline if overhead wires are brought down, the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) said - link

A country sitting on a mountain of coal and surround by an ocean of oil and gas is voluntarily making itself dependent on the vagaries of the wind.. ..the definition of lunacy?.

"The black lie at the heart of Net Zero energy fantasies is that there are workable back-ups for intermittent wind and solar. Apart from oil and gas, there are none. Once politicians remove them from the mix – if elected, the British Labour party plans this in barely 60 months – the old and the infirm will shiver and die when a windless electricity grid produces negligible amounts of crucial power."

If we have no power we can't cook anything. I wonder if we should replace the electric hob with gas.

Formerly known as blackouts. Actually, back in the 1970's we called them power cuts. Dowden is obviously warning because at any minute it could all go bottom up, the Russians could decide they have had enough at any minute, the North Koreans have already issued their warning, the Chinese could crack at any minute and Israel is winding up just about the rest of the world. Maybe a power cut isn't such a big deal.

I think it will work with offshore windmills and long cables. You can get some bloody strong winds if you go towards Iceland and up that way. Solar only gives you 10% of the summer peak so not so good, except if you want to use it in industry. Make more steel and glass during the summer months.

Disposable lighters, candles, batteries and canned food all great I'd add bottled water and dried food flint and sanitary towels for lighting fires (good old survival tips courtesy of ex sas types)some basic medicines too and means to defend yourself But a radio wtf for, being warm and comfortable with a full belly it’s bad enough being lied to,trying to survive and knowing some lying politician is living the good life in a bunker and lying through his/her teeth sod that.

Bottled water is bulky and heavy, we have two large water butts and steri tabs. I'm not talking about a survival situation, I'm talking about coping with power cuts, possibly lengthy power cuts. If at any point we are faced with a survival situation your first thought should be weapons and defending what you have.

I'm looking at buying a generator - for about £500 it looks like you can get something that will tide us over in an emergency.
