Rishi's stealth amnesty appears to be gaining traction.
In the third quarter of 2023 an astonishing 29,000 first decisions were made with 23,000 successful (79.3%) and 6,000 claims refused. A further 4,600 claims were withdrawn with the claimants promptly disappearing into the woodwork.
The 6,000 refusals will almost certainly lodge appeals meaning they will still be around for another two years or more.

I am afraid Dan, we are paying the price for Johnson and Sunak and Patel and Braverman being far more interested in photo opportunities and tabloid headlines and using asylum for votes than doing the less glamorous jobs of governing efficiently - in this case ensuring asylum decision criteria were sensibly balanced, applications were processed quickly and limiting appeals to one and seeking ways to deport applicants who failed initial and one appeal. The crisis stems from those failings . Yet more ineptitude from a failed government. They really do need to be replaced.

No let's go back to the real reason this country is in a mess, it was that knobhead Blair and his open borders FoM, he never gave it a second thought about capping numbers limiting applications, he was thinking of him and his greedy Mrs, think how much money his Mrs could rake in being a human rights lawyer, same with Starmer, yes you can thank the lefties for this fuck up.

You're right in a sense dappy although it's important to remember that asylum claims are decided by a supposedly independent judiciary in tribunals and courts.
The government's involvement has been one of lubricating the claims processing machinery, chiefly by more than doubling the number of caseworkers in less than a year and also by streamlining the process (many fewer are interviewed now - it's largely a paper-pushing exercise).
But the number of successful claims is a reflection of the legal system's attitudes towards asylum claimants rather than the government's.

And of course it will only accelerate under Starmer.

But the number of successful claims is a reflection of the legal system's attitudes towards asylum claimants rather than the government's. Actually it is the Home Office civil servants who decide the vast majority of asylum applications. But it is the Government who ensure that department is adequately resourced and decide (within the limitations of International Law) the criteria against which applications are assessed and decide on the appeals process (currently too many are allowed but process is shambolic). If we were serious about a functioning asylum process, other countries have far better systems than we do. But better quicker processing against a higher bar to be successful doesnt make for photo opportunities on the front page of tabloids and hence Johnson, Sunak, Patel and Braverman have not been interested. We really need serious ;politicians to run a serious government. Its time for a change which mean s Labour soon. Hopefully the Tories will return to being serious and they may be an alternative in 202i9.

Yes of course you're right dappy, tribunals and courts rule on asylum appeals not claims; that is the function of the Home Office.

Rather a lot of claims have been cancelled as a result of the plaintiff not responding to two requests to come and state their case.
Bearing in mind the fact that the reason i nearly died of long covid and three of my wife's co workers at the ministry of justice did was that one of these rubber boat rider scum infected everyone who was in Columbus House off Junction 24 of the M4 for his pathetic attempt at not being thrown back in the fucking sea, i know exactly how the process works. I have family involved in it.

13 years of liberal centrists and this is what you end up with - of course replacing them with another lot of liberal progressives is going to make absolutely no difference at all. In fact the other lot have already said they want to increase the amount of asylum seekers.

Not every cloud has a silver lining. In this particular case, the Rishi Amnesty is going to result in some 90,000+ successful claims if, as promised' he is able to eliminate the 'legacy' backlog by year-end. All of these successful claimants would have been accommodated in dispersal housing or hotels which they will be required to vacate within 28 days of notification of the award of refugee status. At the same time they will qualify for universal Credit and, if so inclined, eligible to take up employment. However, according to 'campaigners' including the Guardian naturally the requirement to quit their state-funded lodgings is going to result in 'thousands of refugees being homeless for Christmas'. Early birds are already staking out prime location as here, outside British Gas HQ somewhere in the London area.

You seem to be finding amusing Dan the shocking way we treat people who will be legally resident in this country and may well become i due course citizens of this country. As with so many things of this appallingly inept government, ikt is utterly inept.

Anyone undocumented should be failed and kicked out, no ifs, no buts ...... OUT. Would that apply to this example..? Z*** was a student, mechanic and lay pastor who survived the genocide in Rwanda. His father, brother and sister didn't. He fled - in just the clothes he was wearing - to Uganda, from which he was moved to a UN refugee camp in DRC, where he spent 3 years, and applied for resettlement schemes in either France or Belgium (French was his second language). Eventually the UNHCR arranged asylum in Britain (amusingly - through some office snafu - he spent his first few weeks believing he was living in Burton, rather than Derby..). He's now a UK citizen. Married to a Derbyshire gal, with a family, and busy (beyond his day job). Everything from working as a volunteer translator for the police and NHS, to helping run a church food bank, organising food deliveries to vulnerable people during Covid, being a school governor and volunteer classroom assistant, and speaking regularly at the National Holocaust Centre in Newark - Z*** puts most of us to shame. A few years ago he was honoured by the Queen (BEM) - and more recently, he was even a guest at the Coronation which, whatever I may think of such things, has to serve as a pretty goldplated signal that such a person is seen as an asset to the nation. "No ifs, no buts.." Really?
