Abbott hold a degree in History from Cambridge, exactly like the current governor of the Bank of England. Those who laugh at her and think they are smarter are likely not the sort who would get into Cambridge. After all it is one of the world's top universities. Abbott achieved a lower second class degree. Not exactly top of the range is it? Today anything lower than a first is pretty weak, but in Abbott's day people could get away with lower scores. Very few people had the priviledge of going to University, let alone Cambridge. |

Very few people had the priviledge of going to University, let alone Cambridge. You could see it in one of two ways I suppose. The thing is very few Jamaicans ever make it to Oxford or Cambridge. They are known to have a low IQ due to their African origin. Actually I used to chat to a bunch of ex-Oxford people on a youtube channel who were discussing this very thing. It was ultra-rare and if they ever turned up they would often struggle badly and not make it. These folk would be of a similar age as well. What started to happen later on I think was they got a load of stick for their admissions policy, so first it was the argument about too many public school applicants and of late it was too few blacks. I think she was admitted during a time where she would have been a serious exception to the rule and it does suggest she is very unlike her brethren. A 2-2 from Cambridge would normally be awarded to someone who didn't do too much work. You do get or at least did get quite a few dossers at those places and they would end up with a third and a job in government. It was like their future had already been decided by that point. I met one who told me he had not been into any tutorials all term. |

I'm guessing a 2:1 because you can usually get to do a PhD with a 2:1 in those days, but with grade inflation it may not be the same now, and if he had a first he would say so. Wiki's info tends to come from what the person chooses to reveal about themselves and is often a copy of a bio on the website etc.
Anyway, I'm not a Daily Mail reader where everything is bipolar. I'd place the woman as reasonably smart and probably a lot smarter than 95% of her critics. There are far worse than her in government regarding the brains department. I do not like many of her leftwing policies, but to give her here due, her arguments are rational and sensible. She sees it all from a different political perspective as compared to what I do. I'd rather not live in a society like Jamaica myself, where she would like it.

Very few people had the priviledge of going to University, let alone Cambridge. The thing is if you got into Cambridge in those days any old grade of degree would guarantee you a good job. The difficulty is in getting in there in the first place. Once you are in the tuition is second to none so you would pass with your eyes closed almost. Like I say it is more down to the amount of work you do, as to what grade you are going to end up with. My girlfriend did philosophy and psychology at Balliol and she got a reading list of books over a foot high for the summer holidays. Anyway, I hear these days they work you really hard. The thing is there are some people so smart they hardly have to do much work and still get top grades, but what with course work and so on it is more how much you read. Like as memory exam almost. |
