A survey in Israel found that the MAJORITY of the population said that they do not believe that there is a God, or that they only sometimes think that their might be. I have associated with Israelis, both Jewish and non-Jewish (when I lived in London) and found their attitude towards religion generally more sensible than that of the average Brit. It has been said that Israelis are more atheist in their outlook than all but one European country. In recent years there has been an outflow of non-religious Israelis from Israel and an inflow of religious Jews (especially from America into the settlements). The current political scenario in Israel is that the "eccentric" variant of religious Judaism now decide who is going to run the country ... and their idea of "country" includes the West Bank.

Israel should give up the settlements vuilt on stolen land andd which are largely ginen to extremist right winf Israelis to act as a sort of armed border control, cement the 1967 border in law and give Palestine statehood, and enlist UN and western forces in annihilating Hamas. Release all Palestinian prisoners held without trial in Israel. Hold a UN controlled election in Palestine and create a no mans land around Palestine like between N and S Korea. And always think about how you would feel if nazi Germany had managed to take over the UK. Would you have given up trying to reclaim your land? And what if the Palestinians again voted for Hamas - would you allow that result to stand? |

I think 'secular' is the right description of most Jews in Israel. -- not subject to or bound by religious rule. As is happening in some European countries right now, there is a move towards right wing extremist government apparently mainly caused by a problem they have no answer to i.e. immigration. Ditto in Israel, and why Israel has moved to right-wing government. They have no answer to the desire of the Arabs / Muslims to destroy Israel. So its dig your heals in and fight back. |

Nope.to Benrley. Just being occupied by a strong force that keeps putting its footprint on what used to be yours by culture and by history. That controls your border, seaports, refuses to let you build an airport, controls your water and fuel. Would you create a reactionary force to liberate your country or not? The 18th century british living in America did. I suppose they were considered terrorists too, as were thz Native Indians whose lands were also stolen by the British. Not to mention the MauMau who wanted their land back.Evzn the King now expresses understanding of their historical position. Course the IRA were labelled terrorists for wanting independence from the country which had abused it for centuries. I get a sour taste when i think of all the land thefts perpetrated by Europe but who label those whose land is stolen as terrorists when they want it back. Hamas wants to destroy Israel . Any historical map will show you the encroachments by seizure and by settlement placement how Israel has eaten away at Palestine. Israel just doesnt openly declare it as a policy. But that is the vertebrae of Zionist purpose and Netanyahu comes from a long line of Zionists. In all honesty I have no skin in this game. I detest national bullying by Israel as much as i detest it from Russia in Ukraine, by the Americans over native Americans, by European gunships in the Indonesian Spice Islands, or Rome over half the known world. But lets keep track of who is the shark and who is the residing minnow. |

Re secularism, the word has more than one meaning.
But it is acute cognitive dissonance to pronounce the State of Israel as having been founded as a safe refuge for Jews, and then suggest it is a secular state.
Interestingly it is theoretically possible for an Arab or Palestinian to become PM of Israel.
Now that would be fascinating.

It has been suggested that many Jews are secular, not that Israel is a secular state. Even so, the killers of Jews don't care whether they are secular or not. Not sure where you got your idea from but it seems that the stress is all yours. |
