www.electrifying.com/blog/knowledge-hub/electric-cars-and-floods-everything-you-need-to-knowHowever, the exterior of the battery pack is electrically isolated, and takes on additional shielding. The high-voltage power-lines running from the battery to the electrical motors are similarly insulated. Electric and hybrid cars also feature fail-safe systems that automatically isolate electrical drivetrain components in the event of a collision or short circuit. Though it’s not an exact science, some actually believe electric cars are better suited to driving in standing water than cars with combustion engines. This is because petrol or diesel cars can easily be stopped in their tracks by water flooding into the engine via air intakes. It’s a good idea to check the maximum wading depth for your car, too. Generally, electric cars are on a par with their combustion powered siblings. For example, both an Audi Q8 and an Audi e-tron have a 500mm maximum rating, as per Audi’s official figures. But it varies from car to car. I think you might want to look at the video that pacifico posted, zany. It clearly shows electric cars catching on fire either after being submerged in water or after being removed from water. And it showed that the battery continues to burn even under water. And when the battery is literally inches from your bum - and prone to explosion - that's not very encouraging. It's possible that these cars had damaged batteries - and that a new car would not do this - but the problem is that these batteries are fairly fragile. That's why in every other application of Li-ion batteries you're told not to subject the batteries to shock (like dropping them). Unfortunately a car is always being subjected to shock just driving along the road, And advisers to the car repair industry advise that EVs that have been subjected to even minor shunts are susceptible to battery damage and should be separated from other cars and buildings by at least 15 feet. And any suspicion of battery damage requires a new battery (i.e. it's a write off). There is a reason why the Royal Mail are very strict about accepting packages that have Li-ion batteries in them. They only accept very low capacity batteries like in a camera or phone. Apologies Steppen if you still thought I was arguing that batteries cannot burn under water. Somewhere above I stated that they do not need oxygen as they form a chemical fire. Perhaps you missed it. So to confirm I agree. My pithy comment was really about A: the likelihood of a car being immersed in the sea. B: The occupants of a car sinking in the sea being worried about the fire under them while they drown. If this was genuine interest I would react differently, but its just more fishing for more and more absurd reasons for EV's to be bad. I could raise similarly unlikely but possible event in ICE cars, such as a road accident where fire leaps from fuel tank to fuel tank as the liquid from the first vehicle flows down the road. But I wont. Regarding wading depth. According to Kia forum its 750mm but I would never drive it in water that deep.

750 mm is around Range Rover depth iirc . That's really good .

There was a report on the BBC 6 o'clock news last night that said that the London fire brigade are being called out every other day for e-bike fires. And that's just in London. And they covered a case where a guy's home burned down when the battery exploded while being charged. He managed to get out but was badly burnt. His girlfriend and two children died because they couldn't get out - also their dog died. The house was gutted.
In yesterday's paper there was a report that said that there are many places where the number of chargers has reduced in the past year because providers have fond the financially unviable. Also the number of EVs being bought in the UK has gone down 14.3% this September relative to September 2022.

Interesting comparison. 2 guys decided to drive from John O'Groats to Lands End. - one in an EV (a £120k Porsche), the other in a £3500 BMW 320D that he bought off facebook. It took the EV driver (not surprisingly) longer to get to Lands End - he was 6 hours behind the Diesel (and had a whole lot of stress to go with it). What was surprising was that it cost the EV driver over twice as much as the Diesel - £259 vs £122. So the Diesel driver could have gone from John O'Groats to Lands End and back again, for less that the guy in the EV spent to go one way. so next time someone tells you that EV's are the future - remember they are trying to bankrupt you.. I got an email from the local Porsche dealer offering me £5k off a new Porsche Taycan. Obviously I'm completely uninterested but it's VERY unusual for Porsche to offer discounts on new cars. They usually regard it as a privilege if you're allowed to buy one at list price. Times are tough for EV sales I think.

He bought a replacement battery on Ebay when the scooter one was stolen. The BBC article was about the lack of checks on these batteries, not a warning that all batteries are dangerous. Frankly I was amazed that the CE certificate is meaningless. We had a fog machine at work that caught fire, luckily no damage was done. When we opened it the thermal fuse was bypassed and missing and the earth wire wasn't connected. It came with a CE mark, but I assumed it was a fake. We reported it to trading standards, haven't heard anything back.

Not another lets make the worst journey for an electric car we can think of and make a video of it. Two 440 mile journeys back to back. Can you find the one where they compare their years driving.

I think it was necessary to quietly abolish it in order to lubricate trade with China.
Trading standards are not interested because your compliant will be a drop in the ocean. They will be polite but you are wasting your time reporting

Their problem highlights the problems of EV versus ICE. It highlights how range anxiety is real . A 200 mile journey in an EV with a 100 mile range , owning an EV without home charging etc These are real problems that do not exist with ICE cars. I don’t know about your neck of the woods but I dont see an infrastructure being rolled out to accommodate EVs after ICE cars are banned .

Pick a car with a very poor EV range. Most EV's are now between 250 and 300 miles per charge. This guy had to stop 8 times. Its called clickbait.

Most expensive EVs who’s range will reduce over time and cold weather .maybe . I trust those range claims as much as I trusted MPG claims over the years , anyway. The cheapest second hand crap box will get you 400 mile per tank of fuel.

Standard charge gives an average of 190 miles. But my point remains that very few journeys are in excess of 150 miles a day. The average return journey is 16 miles.
