The Scotsman? You would as well have quoted the "Scottish" Daily Mail or its many other pseudo "Scottish" papers. The article is a prime example of the Scottish cringe. I notice the 'Rangers' headline above the main headline. That is very informative as the piece comes across as if he was writing from the ultra unionist club's perspective. As for "Scotland talk(ing) themselves up ... only for bitter reality to set in". That may be true but is nowhere near the boastfulness, and Ott expectations of the English, spurred on by their medias prophecies of English glory! You have only won the World Cup once (on home soil and a dubious "goal") and boy, don't you let us forget it! Instead of comparing yourselves to a country which has a population of 5 million to your 55 million, you should be comparing yourselves to the likes of Germany and Italy. Never mind winning last night, given the population difference, you should be beating us every time we meet. But such comparisons show just how wanting England is, and has been, for decades on the world stage.

Population size means little.
All that need be done is find 11 good players. Train them to the peak of their potential and put them on the pitch.
But, instead of doing that, all too many clubs buy skilled internationals. As a result, the remainder of British nationals available to clubs, aren't what they could be.
Abolish the separate leagues and have one UK wide league. Find the best players from all of the UK. Build a team of 11 (plus reserves) from them.
Cap wages at £2 million a year, that way overpaid internationals can't be arsed coming.
UK football will be more competitive.
Imagine Celtic vs Liverpool. Man City vs Rangers. Cardiff City vs Falkirk.
A UK wide set of leagues a UK wide football association.
It'd be better.

England, with a population size of 55+ million should be competing for, and winning, major tournaments all the time. Oh they compete right enough but are found wanting in the final stages of tournaments. Countries the size of Scotland can only hope to produce a decent team now and then. Norway springs to mind as a country, with a similar population but, which has had no success on the world stage. Yes smaller countries can excel, e.g. Denmark winning the 1992 Euro Cup, but they are unable to sustain it over time.

Course it would be better.
The Premier League is currently dominated by cash. Proven internationals are seen as a good wage of generating cash. As a result large sums of money are spent bringing them in. What does that mean for domestic players? Fewer get the chance to rise. And those who do, are known to the internationals. Their techniques are known, their strengths and weaknesses are known.
We should cap wages. Have a league about sportsmanship, not cash. The bigger the league, the more competition. The more competition, the fitter our players have to be to work at being on the UK national team.
Understand?
Abolish the current system, it doesn't work for world cups. Scrap the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland squads.
Clean break.
Build a UK squad of hard working fast paced players with good endurance.
Germany doesn't field sixteen squads, the USA doesn't field fifty, so why should we field four?
ONE NATION.
UK ALL THE WAY.

You mean to tell me buccy you`ve come on the scottish threads to tell us wee England beat the mighty Scotland in a friendly?
Without a doubt the better team won , buy by christ buccy do we live in your head. I can really see how much it means to you , with the emotion and energy you put into your posts.
When world beaters like argentina or France beat scotland , they take it in their stride as something of little consequence , while the wee teams like England compare their progress in sport and much else to their mighty neighbours.

It's the settled will: yet another new poll confirms Scotland wants to become an independent country
Should Scotland be an independent country? (Find Out Now / Independent Voices, 5th-12th September 2023)
Yes 52% No 48%
Scottish voting intentions for the next UK general election (YouGov, 8th-13th September 2023): SNP 38% (+2) Labour 27% (-5) Conservatives 16% (+1) Liberal Democrats 7% (+1)
Seats projection (with changes from 2019 general election): SNP 39 (-9), Labour 11 (+10), Liberal Democrats 5 (+1), Conservatives 4 (-2)

Germany and the USA are regarded as single countires , while the united kingdom of great britian and northern ireland is regarded as a multi national state. Hence why the differnt national football teams and leagues.
Why do we need the uk (for anything?) but in this case football? If scottish teams want to be part of a bigger league , then the future will probably be a permanent european league rather than a small yookay league. If not we stay as we are.
Your problem vinny is your inability to understand football amongst much else , and the uk blinkers you have on in every subject.
The majority dont want a uk league , or a uk football team. The majority of scots according to the latest poll dont want the union at all.
Your country has been trying to assimilate us since your ancestors pushed north in the 7th century , and the scottish identity is still here and stronger than ever.
end the union.

The german , or the frenchman raises lowers his eyes in anticipation of winning an international trophy.......while the englishman raises his eyes in anticipation of the mighty scotland.......

Trust me, you are of little consequence but there's nothing wrong with rubbing a little salt in the wound of a snat; especially when it's been gashed by the 'orrible Inglish'. At least you can always hark back to your 0-0 victory with England to make you feel proud.

Abolish the current system, it doesn't work for world cups. Scrap the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland squads. it doesnt work for world cups? is this a tacit admission that the england team , despite the riches of the premier league , has the worst international footballing record of the major leagues and teams in world football at the world cup?
Is this you telling us you need scotland once again to hold your hand vinny , or is it merely your british nationalist blinkers talking once more?
I think the northern ireland team will cease to exist very soon when ireland reunites , and all irishmen play under the tricolour as a seperate united ireland free of london rule. Scotland and wales will remain seperate teams , and hopefully we can join our irish brothers as free and independent nations away from all your british nationalist nonsense.
