Liz Truss 'is set to cave in' on plan to cut benefits in real terms as Cabinet ministers warn of election disaster if Tories oust her… but another poll finds a record lead for Labour Liz Truss struggling to contain Tory infighting after a chaotic party conference The PM could be forced into U-turn after suggesting benefits cut in real terms Another poll has showed Labour on track for a huge majority at general election www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11296153/Liz-Truss-faces-climbdown-benefits-Cabinet-ministers-rally-round.htmlTruss may still make a good PM. All we have to do is ask her what's the best thing to do and then do the opposite.

It wouldn't actually be a U-turn, as she hasn't actually announced the policy yet. Yet it would be a bit odd to increase pension age benefits by inflation but not working age. Very difficult to sell this to the public.

Can you imagine what that might be like, a ghastly coalition with the SNP, caving in to the green imbecilic policies, bowing down to Mick Lynch and his malevolent despots, foul mouth Rainer gobbing off, rejoining the EU, the 1% of the population of benders, lezzies and trans things dominating legislation and the nationalisation of everything.
I really can't think that that might happen, however many illegal immigrants the left encourage to come here and vote.

Well done mate. Found the board.
I sort of think U turns are us for Liz Truss.
She enjoys a minority of support within her own party. She is not going to be able to get as much through as she wanted to.

I can't think that they might achieve a clear majority, not unless the electorate has succumbed to a powerful anti Liz drug, however there is a possibility of a hung parliament with all the horrors that I described.
Having lived through several Labour Governments I have the feeling another would complete the job of finishing us off.

Very difficult to sell this to the public. That would be a new record. A Uturn before you've had chance to launch your plan.

Very difficult to sell this to the public. I agree with you - if benefits are only going to be increased in line with wages then it would make no sense to increase pensions in line with inflation. Although sense from this crowd does seem to be a bit lacking lately.

Green energy, caring for the environment and rejoining the EU. Everything the majority of voters want. How disgusting. :lol

Almost anything now has got to be better than this government
Remember this - If Truss had of got her way, she would have REDUCED the incomes of some of the poorest and least well off people in this country, including Millions of working people on low pay.
However, with the polls looking bleak now for the Tories, many Tory MPs would not have backed Truss's proposals to raise benefits in line with average pay, and she now has no choice but to U-Turn and back down.
You can call the SNP or Sturgeon what you like, and you can call the unions whatever names you wish, but they certainly would never kick some of the least well off people of this country in the teeth, only the Conservative Party would do that.

BVL said If she is smart she will raise with inflation. The logic is quite simple. You can't keep switching formulae to pick the lowest rise, i.e, choose between RPI, CPI average earnings - which ever is the lowest. That's just deliberately trying to lower the relive rate, and the other argument is food and energy take a higher proportion of a low income's money, and since these are the two sources of inflation they really aught to be above CPI. CPI is moderated by say imports of consumer goods from China which are often deflationary. Truss did say she was not in favour of changing it, so it can not be called a u-turn. The last she said was it was undecided. She's obviously being pressured by those generous folk like Duncan Smith. A constituent of hers before she was selected as PM said she might look meek but she has the thickest skin of anyone he knew. This suggests she will not be pushed around, and one other thing was she did say the objective was growth but not at the expense of the lowest paid. See - it would be disingenuous to say U-turn, more like fend it off.

How can you U-turn on a policy that has not been made yet?

The point here for me is that she doesn't enjoy the support of her own party.
A lame duck.
The policies she advocated for in her campaign for party leadership are in large part undeliverable because her own party does not widely support them.
In this way the Conservative landslide majority in parliament has been effectively neutralised. They have self destructed. Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
