Fight spirit is one thing and can be constructive. Continuously denigrating others, which it what you do, is totally negative. Negativity is needed for improvement. Can we get back to the topic?

Firstly, the more you continue to cut, cut, and cut the BBCs funding, the poorer the service becomes, and the quality of programming goes down, or certain services suffer or disappear all together.
The BBC HAS NOT cut the over 75s free licence fee, the government did
It is not within the remit of the BBC to provide Welfare or Benefits, THAT is the job of government to do, would you expect British Gas to provide free gas and electricity to over 75s. ?
The licence fee was frozen, and the range and scope of what the government expects the BBC to pay for and contribute to has widened, the resources available to our National Broadcaser is wearing thinner and thinner.
The Conservatives always know the cost of everything, yet the value of nothing.
Despite the cuts, our BBC manages to remain the most popular, most watched TV broadcaster in the UK, consistently beating all rivals in the ratings / audience numbers. Perhaps its the lack of interupted programming through advertising, perhaps its simply because the BBC ( through the licence fee ) still manages to provide popular, quality programming.
The government has a say on which languages the BBC broadcasts in, and how many hours, the government decides how much The BBC World Service gets from both the licence fee and by grant each year from The Foreign & Commonwealth Office.
I guess that the government decided that as Nigeria is a major English speaking nation, a member of the Commonwealth, and with historical and cultural ties to the UK, the service in Pidgin English is wothwhile.
It should be noted that both China and Russia are seeking to spread their influence throughout Africa, and the BBC, together with other Western broadcasters offer a counterbalance to Chinese or Russian News and information which as we all know, always follows the government line.
"If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear" (BBC)

This was not intended as a discussion about the BBC in general but about the World Service in particular.
I'd be interested to see a source for the claim that the government of the day dictates which languages the WS broadcasts in. Can you point to one?

Sky is great. If you want to pay a minimum of 75p per day instead of 44p for channels with hardly any UK content, fill your boots. Why would you pay for either?

The WS is funded by the Foreign Office so I guess they get to call the shots...

Partially funded. 75% of the funding for the World Service comes from the license fee (see posts passim).

Negativity is needed for improvement. Can we get back to the topic? Let me ask what constantly going on about war, death, famine, disaster does for the community? Can you tell us how that is a service? Who is it serving?

You also ignore my point. Have another go as answering it if you can. I'm genuinely interested how you think it is a service.

You tell me I'm too negative, but I'm but a shadow of the negativity which is the World Service programme material. Is it a certain type of negativity you are troubled with? Not the negativity in promoting war eh? That's OK I guess.
Ask who the World Service are not negative about and the answer is Elon Musk. They treat him like the new Buddha. Anyone would have thought he was their prime sponsor.
