Dear Bentley, You say that Elton John has admitted in an interview that “And all the science, I don't understand". So let us face it, he has very little chance of being allowed to go to Mars on that basis. Cosmonauts must have a great amount of scientific and technical knowledge and abilities. Veronika Oleksychenko Cosmonauts have never been to the moon.

Imo the argument that we need to spend huge resources to explore other planets because we might get hit by a fireball anytime soon is about as weak an argument as you could find . However humans seem to be at their best when trying to solve impossible problems and there could be access to huge resources in future . There is no "might" about it. It is a certainty. The only question is will something else have wiped us out before one hits. Apart from an asteroid, there is a dozen other things that could lead to a mass extinction.

The last time it happened was 65 million years ago….and you are correct , there are many things that could kill us all in the meantime .

If a woman was first out of the spacecraft on Mars she would ask where John Lewises was, want a cappucino, and put an outfit on, thinking you never know who you will meet.

Some scientists think we were struck by a large asteroid 12,500 years ago. They reckon a significant one hits every 10,000 years, and a giant one every 100 million. Scientists "think" we are clear for the next 100 years as they estimate they have found 90% of earth killers. However there could be something nasty lurking behind the sun that we simply cannot see yet. A decent size rock is just going to miss us in 2029 (20,000 miles), and 2036... but it's chaotic out there with everything pulling on each other and bits falling off / gases escaping... so there is a chance we get hit.

Scientists think a lot of things . None of them would justify the huge investment to move mankind from one planet to another on the sole reason that we may or may not get hit by a big rock every 10000 years and a really big one every 100 million years .

The point is it could happen, and there would be nothing we could do. I could take your point about space travel being a waste of money if the world wasn't full of people spending money on shit they don't need lol. 2023 global spending: Space programs: $117b Alcohol $1.3t Tobacco $1t Fast Food $980b Haircuts $355b Shoes $352b Pornography £97b Handbags $80b Hats $26b False Nails $9b

IMO short mindedness that excludes the possible need, based upon the history of planet earth, for Humans to make living on another planet at some time in the future a real and a practical aim for the the survival of the human species, is a case of not thinking the situation through.
The problem is not in moving everyone and or everything to another planet, it is in creating the ability to do so, if or when the need arrives.

The short mindedness and indeed idiocy of spending huge resources solely for the possibility of moving a future elite in the case of an extremely rare event is obvious . The money could be used for providing spectacles for geriatrics , specifically for geriatrics incapable of reading the phrase ‘ sole reason ‘ in a post . Of course , some of them might read it but not understand the meaning of context . No amountof money can help them . Imo exploring the solar system should not be based on hysterics l It should be based on the principle that the technology and scientific knowledge itself should be used for the benefit of everyone and the possibility that mankind could exploit the resources of the solar system . That is a far better basis than the fear of getting hit by a big rock .

It is bigger than that. We might be the only life in the Universe, and if we don't become become multi-planetary then all life may end with us. We may just be the seed that spreads life into other parts of the universe.

I’ll just wear a tin foil hat .I have no problem with using resources to explore space , I’ve explained that in a previous post .A by product of that MAY be that the human race might survive a million year/ hundreds of thousand years catastrophic incident due to some humans living away from Earth . However spending huge resources SOLELY to achieve a place for humans to maybe survive in case the Earth gets hit with a big rock or another extremely rare ‘ extinction event ‘is imo silly …extremely silly tbh.
