After WW2 Europe rebuilt rejigged new machines and a willing workforce as did Asia , they had less overheads lower wages and even with shipping costs they were very competitive, we did not slow out of date machinery methods that cost more to produce the same widget or whatever, we could not compete, the Unions fought all and any changes the owners want to introduce to be more efficient IMO saw it happen up close and personal The difference between us and other nations was that Atlee's government pissed the Martial Aid money on almost anything but supporting industry in the way of Germany, Japan and many others. And you're right about the unions but their obstinacy wasn't confined to the immediate post-war era, they were still fucking this country up thirty and forty years later.

Indeed - had we spent our aid rebuilding industry we may have been more competitive. However even if we had had new tooling and factories we would have still had the same old unions so it probably would not have turned out any different.

another side to this from my own field of expertise people set up research facilities in their garages back yards and the like. My own (distant) relatives did this and made a pile. I just cant see it happening these days. Elfin safety for one thing. So did my great great grandad. He ended up owning the whole street in London for his business in making carts. They sold them in Harrods.
Anyway you are blaming your tools. Either do it or don't do it. Don't make excuses.
you misunderstand. I have already done it. I started a company with sod all except the winnings from the 16/1 punt i had on the nag the company formation agent used to name the company after at the 2.30 at sandown and building as ivwent i made a few million over the years much of which went in running costs and the pile of bricks that is jog towers. I refer to the fact it would be impossible for my kids or grand daughter to repeat my actions without breaking various planning laws and elfin safety crap. Not that i am not averse to bending such crap, but pointing out what was legal for grandad and my aunts and uncles wasn't legal for me and the opportunities are now shrinking further. Not excuses. Facts If we had to fight a war today the way grandad had to then, we’d lose. Badly

What is not to like in other words regarding our government and your type of business.

Yes, Unions don't create Jobs , but they have certainly destroyed many over the years, they still cannot understand that most workers are not in a Union the days of closed shops are over

After that Britain decided to switch from selling goods to selling services, insurance, financial and the like. Only problem with that is how few people are needed to bring the ackers in and how you then try and get that money better shared out.

The Chinese revolution has greatly lowered our prices, but the thing is it has lowered the prices of industrial machines by the same amount. This means that for a modest investment you could manufacture something. There is no reason why a Brit can't use the same resources available to the Chinese and use the same methods to get the same results. My belief is the reason they do not is their methods are different and they lack a proper education. It's not the government. Everyone tries to pass the buck to the government.

Which at this time is approximately $8k a year.

The success we'd have had if we'd used the money to improve our industry would have been self-fulfilling and the unions would have had nothing to protest about, though I'm sure they'd have found something despite the possibility the public would have been against them. Sadly the same mistakes continue, with unions, employers and governments not having a clue of even where to begin.

You do get ripped off over here something chronic.
I really don't like the word impossible though. What you do is use as many of their suppliers and services as you can, so it is just like you being in China but not in it, if you catch my drift. It may be argued that they are a long way away so physical transport is an impediment. The first thing this stupid country should do to get less stupid is plug itself into the BRI. You can do it by train, plane or boat and it is all marked up on number of kilos and how fast you want it. Thinking out of the box here, one realises that if you manufacture small things this problem starts to vanish, and as a double bonus you don't need so much physical space and capital outlay. If you can manufacture it from your home you can reach the stage of achieving a product that works in the market so it would be easy to get investment if that is the way you want to go.
Alibaba is a good trading platform to use. I mean once you start using their services you start to get how bloody efficient they are and it is like a world where everything works on time and as promised. Because of lack of fuckups it means you can steam ahead and make your money.
I'm serious though about learning to think like they do. Not only will you understand them and generate warm vibes, it would mean your business processes would be logical and mathematically optimised. You just move up to a more professional standard that rubs off onto you if you are paying attention. They did not get to be the world's second largest economy without employing a few nifty tricks of their own.
Remember the 1980s and the Japs.
Maybe marry a Chinese girl. I was having a crack at trying to understand their language the other day. I'll see how it goes.
