I really don't know myself. I can give you tons of possible reasons, but to know which are important and which have little effect is very hard to measure. I guess I could start by chucking in a few possibilities. Schools are the obvious one, but then there are parents as well. Even with schools, is it the schools or what they are told to teach. Perhaps it is woke agendas which displace the quality learning, or perhaps it is genetic with immigration from the third world, or perhaps a brain drain, or even to do with what we eat or breathe.

Left wing influence is to blame for our slow decline. Left wing governments, left wing civil servants, left wing trade unions, left wing police, left wing teachers, left wing idiots who glue themselves to roads. The result was inevitable.

In what way do you mean stupid, Baron.
We used to have an 11+ and grammar schools. Leaving aside the merits or evils of grammar schools the 11+ caused a focus on the three ‘R’ s which has not remotely been achieved in mybdaughter’s or grand daughter’s generation.
The SAT tests for which Sarah my eldest was a guinea pig were a fucking joke. The use of deliberately ethnic items like samosas in place of apples and pears as in my year meant teachers who were supposed to be teaching arithmetic saying if i have three apples and give one third of what i have to little johnny how many do i have now found themselves answering the question ‘miss, what’s a samosa’ and this was, i think, quite deliberate anti white bias.
Throughout my education we were told there were no prizes for second best. Attendance was expected and non attendance without good reason attracted the attention of social services truancy officers. School assemblies included announcements of pupil’s achievements of excellence on and off the curriculum.
Right up to my final days in compulsory education my name was mentioned more than once and so were every other achiever in sport for example. The school rugby, football netball and hickey teams naturally got a mention for winning a game but so did i when i made the time trial for the 10k. Achievement was applauded wherever and however it was made. Selection for musical achievements snd selection by a local am-dram company for their latest performance got a mention too.
In utter stark contrast under Labour achievement is a dirty word. My daughter’s success in the kayak club race was unmentioned. And many others like it. My brother was puzzled to receive a letter from his son’s school and was less than impressed to find it commended him snd his offspring for actually attending the class FFS
Things are a little better in recent years the teachers were very pleased with my grand daughter’s musical theatre stage performances along with similar extra curricular success enjoyed by other pupils but i can’t help thinking that was all down to a calculated risk. Melisa was chosen to be interviewed by the OFSTED inspectors in the inspection at her primary school and as the inspector was wrapping up the head came over to say they were sorry but Melissa had to leave early in order to get to her dress rehearsal for her performance in ‘the little mermaid’ with her thestre group. To which the inspector, clearly ruffled ( i was there, i was the chauffeur !!) said ‘oh, and you authorise these absences do you ?)
To which the head replied without the slightest hesitation ‘very much so, the group of children who do this have shown remarkable progress in english, comprehension, diction, confidence, physical education including gymnastics, and mathematics’ and the OFSTED twat stood there like a hooked fish.
The report gave a special mention to the school for its support of extracurricular dance, drama, writing and music and the labour LEA assholes have hated the school for it ever since.

I think it's the sad result of society becoming too decadent, too wealthy, too mollycoddled.
How much brain-dead wokery do we think there'd be if we were in a Ukraine situation? The woke stupidty would drain away like water on dry earth.
But as it stands, we're too comfortable... And the Devil makes work for idle hands.

In what way do you mean stupid, Baron. Lack of mental abilities. I define that to mean intelligence which is the ability to solve problems that you wish to solve. For example, the problem of acquiring food to eat and a roof over one's head, not the ability to win University Challenge, but measures of ability in the real world of things that make a positive effect on one's life.

"or perhaps it is genetic with immigration from the third world".....you obviously live with head inserted snuggly up your arse if that's all you can come up with.
Was that today's order from Botwankers HQ in Beijing?
"Today you must must make up any old crap and post in on your designated chat site...include immigrants so all the twitchy right armers latch onto it and agree! Dress it up in some smug innocent little post and then watch as all the white middle class twats scuttle around slagging each other off"
"I guess I could start by chucking in a few possibilities." yeah give it shot...potter off round the internet and find some inspiration for your shyte.

I know you might say that's a poor proxy, but numbers are so down that it is like one Brit for every hundred Americans in subjects I find interesting. Indeed the way I see it is the only people moving tech forwards is the US and the Far East. India is starting to see a rise it is worth pointing out. So where the fuck are they? They started at these brilliant British world leading schools but now vanish into the aether.

Why should I care as a 9 year old what Iron Age man did in his hut. This was the kind of irrelevant crap we were told to learn and I pretty much skived off the lot. A teacher would actually get a shock if I were to hand any homework in. Homes for me were for living in , not working! After being told by teachers that I stand to fail everything, I decided I aught to do 6m of work as I quite fancied going to university. I bought one book on revise physics, one on revise maths and started using the library for some background reading in another A level, and passed them all with good grades and got into a Russell Group university, and on a grant as well. I also passed another A level which I've never had a single lesson in a year early. I had some friends like myself as well and they too pissed the teachers off.

The question before the House is that "Britain has become Stupiderererishish"...its because of immigrants....I think....no....maybe its "woke"....errmmm....what other twattish comments can I come up with...hmmmm...dunno....but sally forth and debate...

You are an example of the decline I speak of. You don't have the brains to debate in a civil manner. Well you did start off rather badly. For me the answer is reasonably easy, a united country will perform better than a disunited country. In my experience the country becomes more disunited under the Tories, and the Tories dominate parliament. From my perspective the hard left and the hard right of politics have the most disuniting affect.

It started to become stupid from the mid sixties due to changes in the education system brought in by the Wilson government and continued by the Tories, yes, Thatcher became education minister under Heath but instead of halting it, her excuse was that too many schools were in the process of changing to comprehensives; it wasn't helped by the American scene of the hippy flower power that spread across the Atlantic seemingly adopted by Britain rather more that the rest of Europe. Even as it happened I forecast it would be the worst ten years for a very long time.

You are born with your intelligence, you don't acquire it. Education (and other environments) can show you how to use that intelligence, but you do not gain more.
I'd ask what the opening poster meant by "stupider" and how they went about measuring it.

I had some friends like myself as well and they too pissed the teachers off. i think that is quite an uncommon thing I remember during my university years a chap who was the spitting image of Elvis Costello, a complete wierdo in so many ways called Jimmy Maggs. He was doing a ph.d on the metabolism of short chain fatty acids in ruminants sponsored by the National Institute for research in Dairying. Short Chain Fatty Acids are what makes rancid milk stink. They chemically bond to your skin, clothes and hair. Maggs could be detected in the corridor 200 yards away as he meandered tound. After three years he submitted his thesis and left. About six months later he was awarded his doctorate and secured a post doctoral research post in Liverpool. I never saw him again after the day he came to submit the thesis. About a year later i was working at 3am on my gel electrophoresis affinity chromatograms of glycoproteins when i became aware if a powerful whiff of butyric acid in the corridor behind me. I wrote it up in the incident book as a potential fume cupboard leak as i saw no other likely source and janet parker had recently died of smallpox following a fume hood failure. Tbe next day all sorts of people were saying i had been visited by tbe ghost of jimmy maggs. The guy was a high iq individual and capable of extreme independent drive, as evidenced by the fact in three years of research he barely spoke to his supervisor !
