A badge of honour would be a better desciption A criminal record can have life changing consequences and should not be 'encouraged' so glibly. Wow we really do have to state the obvious to some posters.
I F YOU DON'T WANT A CRIMINAL RECORD DO NOT COMMIT A CRIMINAL ACT
Can't believe we have to spell some things out to challenged posters.

Assault is a criminal act. If you believe your life is in danger you can take the appropriate action to defend yourself, if idiots decide to cause danger to life by holding up a highway then the 'victims' of their crime can take action to protect themselves, get your facts right.

You are of course taking the extreme case but the chap who 'dragged' the protester across the road was not in fear of his life.

He absolutely was, how did he know these highway criminals weren't armed?, no one has any way of knowing if any of these Just stop oil criminals are tooled up, if you are going to commit a act of crime be prepared for the consequence, we can't second guess what their intentions are, they are throwing orange substances around everywhere, how are we to know it doesn't contain dangerous chemicals, or even acid?
If they don't want to be roughed up then they should obey the law.

It's not a case of 'so far', the police should arrest anyone who throws any substance around, I don't care who it is, you CAN NOT go around throwing unknown substances, it is criminal, and they should face instant prison sentences, and if innocent victims of their crimes has to defend themselves there should be NO charges brought.

By the same respect 'so far' also applies to people who are assaulting protesters, "so far no one has been seriously injured".

The courts have no dilemma, it's justifiable to defend yourself against substance throwers, the Judge just rules the assault was due to being the victim of circumstance, and the person causing the assault would not be in court had they not been a 'victim' of a crime.......simple logic really.

In Germany one Midland Banker glued himself to the road surface, the Police could not melty the glue as he had mixed it with something else, so the German Officer drilled into the road surface , he ended up in prison with block of concrete and tarmac stuck to his hand.

So let's work this out.
We are at some sort of event, then a bunch of weirdo freaks start spreading a 'unknown orange substance all over the place', how many of us would stand there and not be alarmed about what this substance was and what harm it could cause?
Does that not give each every one us the legal right to defend 'our space', how do we know we aren't under attack from terrorists or hostile forces, that gives every law abiding civilized citizen in the UK the right to 'defend' their space.
