I hate to break it you, but most of our sewers were built before 1950 (accepted date from which we started to cause some of the current warming), and for large periods of their existence is was warmer than it is now. It is just a bollocks reason to pretend it is an unfixable problem. This is the problem, decades upon decades of under investment during nationalisation... because sewers are right at the bottom of the priority list for government spending. Yes, because nationalised industries were anathema to Tory governments.

Yes, because nationalised industries were anathema to Tory governments. Show me a single Labour manifesto that calls for (a) increase in water bills to pay for investment (b) increase in taxes to pay for investment. They are not even calling for it now. They want to fine water companies into magically coming up with the £600b needed to fix the sewers lol. You have this weird view that the Tories are the source of all our problems, rather than a symptom of it. Why do you think we consistently have one of the lowest tax burdens in Europe, yet all politicians are scared to call for higher taxes? Explain why Starmer is going after populist areas of taxation rather than having high taxes for all like the Nordic countries? We actually share a lot of outcomes that we would like. However, you can not find the honesty to admit what the actual problem is. It is really simple, the UK population want Nordic levels of public services, funded by US levels of taxation. If this is wrong then please explain how the party offering the lowest taxes has spent the most time in power...

But consistently in polls 65 to 70% of the public say they would accept tax rises. Maybe Labour needs to be more confident. Maybe the problem is that the only people who can afford more tax are the rich and they have the power to stop parties getting elected.

Give them the same money and then compare.

I am thinking our problems are in the lack of innovation, we cannot rely on tunnel vision forever.

It needs a tremendous amount of investment to totally split sewage pipes from rainwater pipes. In some areas, it was allowed to use a single system to run sewage and run off from guttering. In other areas there are totally separate rainwater drains and sewage drains. In yet others (my own area) there is no water collection of house run off as everyone has a soakaway. There are only sewage pipes, but some naughty people find that their soakaway gets blocked and they divert their rainwater into the sewage pipe. I don't. I have water butts on all my down pipes and when they are full the excess runs to soakaway.
No rainwater should be going into sewage pipes, ever.

The outcry caused by the tiny NI rise they had to scrap suggests otherwise lol. "The rich"... do you think Nordic countries do not have rich people? It is cultural, British people don't like high taxation. When you speak to people in other countries it is obvious that they have a different attitude to us. Blaming "the rich" is just the left's version of the right blaming immigrants.

98% of Scotland’s beaches are safe to swim off!
2023 not only sees the highest number of bathing waters ever in Scotland, but the highest number rated excellent for water quality – and a total of 98% of locations achieving a classification of sufficient or better.
Scotland shows the true scale of England’s dirty river crisis
Does Scotland show there is an alternative to this system? Scottish Water is a wholly public entity directly accountable to the Scottish Parliament. It offers lower bills than any of the English companies, and invests around 35% more in infrastructure. This is delivering results for the Scottish taxpayer and public.
Whereas a recent investigation found that none of England’s rivers and waterbodies are in good health, 67% of those in Scotland are. But the issue of sewage pollution into rivers is a growing one in Scotland, too.

Where the charges are 10 to 15% cheaper. Give them the same money and then compare. Scotland are free to charge whatever they want for their water - England does not get a say. Rubbish. The labour party , based in london in your country , told the branch in scotland to privatise scottish water prior to 2007 , and labour were promptly kicked out before they could complete water privatisation .
That resulted in a system where business pays private water rates in scotland , but the public pay for a nationalised system in their council tax.
In 2005, the Labour/LibDem coalition government in Holyrood brought in the ‘Water Services etc. (Scotland) Act 2005’ to open up competition and force the deregulation of non-domestic water customers.
The Labour-led administration also created the Water Services etc. (Scotland) Act 2005 (Consequential Provisions and Modifications) Order 2005 which handed the Competition Commission in London the sole power to investigate and make judgments on proposed licence modifications or Scottish Water price-control decisions in cases where the Water Industry Commission for Scotland and the relevant private provider disagreed.
Scottish Water’s own website notes:-
“Under the Water Services Act (Scotland) 2005 Scottish Water had to split its operation into wholesale (Scottish Water) and retail (Business Stream) units. Although remaining a part of the Scottish Water group, Business Stream is a new business working completely independently of its parent company in order to ensure fair and transparent retail practice under the rules of the new deregulated marketplace for business customers.”

What nonsense are you wittering on about now - England does not set water charges in Scotland. If you want less sewage in your water then you are free to pay whatever it takes.
