What's wrong with Sinn Fein doing well in NI local elections? If that's who the voters want organising their bin collections all power to them surely? You read me wrong, I'm not complaining, I have no tank in this battle. But the DUP only supported Brexit because Sinn Fein wanted Remain (yes, they are that petty) without realising that they didn't have a NI solution. The chickens are coming home to roost. The DUP did not lose any support.

Apologies for butting in, but you're talking bollox. The DUP supported Brexit because they were and are a Brexit supporting party who represented the majority in Northern Ireland who voted for the UK and Brexit. Here to help.

I ve only read a few notes here but have i missed something? The IRA hung up there guns because they agreed to democracy, that elections would determine its fate. What is wrong with that? its how democracy works.

Unfortunately there's a significant minority who want to perpetuate them.

Yes there are some in the Republican movement who still refuse to follow the ways of peace and keep attacking the Police, but I don't think they are very many in number or taken any notice of in the political process.

I'm not aware of any Unionist paramilitaries still active - I think someone torched a Customs post at Belfast docks last year but that is about it.

What will be interesting to see if the Unionists lose the majority of the voters as new voters come in due to birth differences in favour of the Catholic group. In this case I can see N.I becoming part of the ROI.
However economics and politics of either side could delay this becoming reality for some time even if the political will is there.
Looking at Britain as well as losing population and tax revenue I think the loss of food products would probably hit us the hardest.

If Eire takes it off our hands and pays for that support the UK will be quids in.

I guess we would also need to come to an agreement re NI pensioners in the event of a pull out.

Of course you are correct in the cost to the uk taxpayer , more like £12 billion , more than the annual EU membership , but it begs the question why westmisnter repeatedly invaded ireland from the 12th century onwards , finally completed conquest in the 16th century , ran ireland as a single unit/kingdom/country for 400 years , then anti democratically partitioned 6 counties ( of which only two had large unionist majorites , two had large nationalist majorities , and the other two split almonst evenly) to the position you are now bleating about the annual cost of an anti democratic partition your country enforced in 1921.?
Is this the latest face saving excercise?
The whole world knows washington and brussells told london whats what over northern irleand and brexit , and westmisnter jumped to attention and said yes sir three bags full sir. Despite the bleat about brexit being a uk vote , part of the uk got to remain.
No amount of spin or puerile face saving is going to erase that global embarressment for you pacifico.

Estimates on top of that for the thirty years of trouble for security alone have been around the £80 billion mark.
uk government is liable for northern irish pensions. All northern irish people who paid into the uk system have a claim , as we know from scotland in the indy ref 2014. If the uk gov refused to pay out , they would leave themselves open to massive legal challenges.
Again , somethng that should have been thought of by the spitefull british in 1921. As we know , westmsinter dont do long term strategy .
The uk gov already pay state pension to millions outside the uk , under rules that would equally apply to both scottish and northern irish pesnioners i nthe event of either/both becoming indpendent.
We already know the uk gov told scotland( same for n.I ) that indy wont affect our state pension and westmsinter liability.

That's not embarrasment. That's compromise. And it's nothing like London & Dublin telling Brussels what's what when they threatened to place a vaccine border between Ireland and the north. If you want embarrassment see the SNP and their ongoing corruption.
