TTL, I'm going to be generous and say, you are wrong. I remember very well the discussion you refer to. When I retired, I was prompted by someone to enquire about certain benefits that I may be entitled to, benefits that I subsequently discovered I did not qualify for. I was unsurprised and was certainly not bitter about it. For the record, I have never claimed one thin penny in benefits of any sort in my life. Hmm, Never been to a hospital, GP or dentist then? Never turned on a light, used gas, drank water or boarded a train? Never been to a library, park or public baths? The NHS is only free to British Citizens when you need to use it, Red having been in the Forces paid NI and income tax on his earnings, when he left the Forces and carried on working until he retired same thing paid into the Welfare System, week in week out He bought his own house paid for it not free, household bills energy and Council Tax again he pays for it, he will pay for his water supply as well, as for trains to use them costs an arm and leg they are not free, local Parks, Council Library all paid for via Council Tax if he uses them or not, as for Public Baths you have to pay to use them as well He will have an Army Pension which he contributed to during his service, if he is old enough to claim it, he will also have a state pension which he paid for if both combined takes him over the tax threshold, he will have to pay some income tax. I am in my 70's and because I have more than one pension which means I still pay income tax even though I am retired

Public forum, mush. I get to comment on anything that you come out with on it. That's how these things work. I agree and long may it reign. But I made a comment to a particular person after he made the comment that he had not had benefits of any sort and pointed out that benefits are all around us. You have not made that claim.

My point is they are benefits that we all claim almost daily.
I have never been to the doctor and said "I want to pay full price" I simply could not afford it.

Well all I can say is fucking lucky you. Hundreds of thousands of decent, hard working people have to claim welfare through no fault of their own. And many hundreds more abuse it and think that the tax payers owe them a living. How do you know when you have no experience of dealing with benefits? Answer, you don't. As usual you are talking from a position of ignorance.

The fact that we are in a fortunate position now is no accident, it was planned. Having said that I'm certainly not looking down on people who, for whatever reason, genuinely rely on benefits.

Exactly, I do not have a problem with anyone who needs benefits if not well enough to work, that is what the system is for, but I do know people that are fit and well and claimed benefits for years, my dad who is no longer with us summed it up perfectly.
He said if he had his time again, he would never have worked hard, never saved any money never bought his own home, pissed it all up the wall, he would have been given a Council House and every benefit going as some of his classmates had for years, when Mum was placed in a Nursing Home all that would have been free of charge.

As usual you are talking from a position of ignorance. FFS how do you kow I never have had benefits? The fact is that our benefit system has been abused for years. How many young girls leave school and intentionaly get knocked up my numerous fathers as career choice?
And the fraud has got worse not better as the years go by.
Benefit fraud during pandemic cost taxpayers an ‘eye-watering’ £10.1bn
The amount lost to scammers during 2021 and 2022 was five times more than all other years put together, official figures show
