We'll probably never know what the meaning of life is. I read somewhere that we know the meaning of death: we die because evolution is not possible without death.
Is this true? If so, does it throw any light on the meaning of life?

Define death. Is it when the conscious sentient being within doesnt exist? If it is, then were we dead before we were born?

If it is, then were we dead before we were born? You know what death is. Death is not to exist. Everything else apart from consciousness exists before and after an entity exists. There are some who believe that the ‘ biosphere’ is a single entity.

The word 'died' in the preceding short sentence is a verb. Something that doesn't exist can't be the subject of a verb. When the OP refers to death, it refers to the state of being that follows the action of dying (the verb 'to die').

Of course we could just post the dictionary definition and close the thread .

The Op asks to examine the meaning of death .That’s what I did. It was you that turned it into a lesson in semantics.

The Op asks to examine the meaning of death .That’s what I did. It was you that turned it into a lesson in semantics. When the question what is the meaning of life? is asked, it is understood that the querent is asking why do we live? I assumed that the question what is the meaning of death? would be understood to mean why do we die? My assumption proved incorrect. As your response was not to answer that question, but to describe the state of death. If it is 'semantics' to point that out, so be it.

It’s it not improper to ponder what death actually is when pondering why we die . What is the ‘ meaning’ of death might have been a clue when you re read the title of your thread.

What is the meaning of death?.when a living entity ceases to function. Is evolution possible without death? No one knows . If evolution is not possible without death does this throw any light on the meaning of life? . Not really . There you go.👍

If so, does it throw any light on the meaning of life? Interesting question. Why is death necessary for evolution? That may be true in the long term, since evolution = change, and change happens gradually through the generations, but in the short term, we can only pass on our genes while we are alive.
