A petition which was launched to scrap non-Welsh names for Welsh places has been picking up steam following the move to ditch the English version of Brecon Beacons National Park in favour of the original name – Bannau Brycheiniog
“I do think there is an issue of colonialism, no matter how many centuries it might be since Wales was conquered and then subsequently made legally part of England.
“However, even without this the Welsh place names have existed for a lot longer than the English versions and there is no justification in saying that it is forcing the Welsh language on people because there is no need to be able to understand the meaning of the place names in order to simply say them.
“We don’t think it wrong to expect people to use names like Worcester and Loughborough even then there is no way of knowing from the spelling how they should be pronounced, and I certainly have no idea what they actually mean.
“At least with Welsh there are clear rules of pronunciation which mean the manner of pronouncing Abertawe or Rhydaman is easily known even without an understanding of what they mean
Im sure this is something the "british" of this forum can get behind...........supporting the native british language and british placenames.

Take the tram between De Panne and Knokke-Heist Eventually the boredom will cause you to glance at the various safety warnings regarding the doors and windows and stuff These are bilingual, reflecting the two nationalities making up tbe Belgian identity, French and Flemish After ten minutes, start reading the Flemish words in Rabb C Nesbitt’s accent Trust me on this, Flemish is in fact drunken glaswegian

I like both. Im just surprised there is no outword show of support for the welsh. "Welsh" is an english language nickname for the british. We have all these people swearing their undying love for britian and the british on these forums and off them , but in reality , they want to nick the term british from the welsh , but none of the british language culture and customs.
It really is a strange one . A sort of schrodingers nationality .
Its a bit like the french calling modern france "gaul" , but not wanting to learn any of the gaulish language.
I think english is the worst sounding of most of the european languages i have heard. The rest all follow more or less strict rules , but english is made up on the hop.
....but then , what do you expect from a language which is half french , part german , part danish with loads of subcontinent words thrown in for good mix.

Symington in ayrshire for exmaple was founded by the flemish , and flemish spoke there for many years.

I am very certain of what point is , Languages dont die becasue of small numbers speaking it. Didnt you know that? Cornwall , an area the size of scottish lothian , kept their celtic language alive for over a thousand years till the 17th century.
Are you saying because there is only half a million british native language speakers , they shoudnt be supported ?
Why dont you support the british handyman? # scratches head#

I never said they did, I simply posted a fact of the number of Welsh Speakers living in Wales, what happens there is down to them it is not my County I don't live there never will, and yes I know where the language spoken there came from originally, allegedly in the Bronze age and it was also spoken right across what is now called England , according to many Language Historians

One of my first jobs - my girlfriend and I lied about our ages to get it - was a summer spent running a youth hostel near Brecon.
I wonder if that place (last went there a few years ago. Still a lovely town) will now be officially known as Aberhonddu.
(As I said earlier - I have no argument with the proposals. So long as they leave Llareggub well alone.)

What do we expect? What we get, I reckon — the ability to exactly describe the physical and metaphysical world for which it has become the global language for art, business and science as the pinnacle of the Indo-European language development. Nothing wrong with individuals wanting to maintain and resurrect other languages, and I’m an advocate for becoming familiar with other languages because dual or multiple approaches to communication tend to assist clarity of thought…
