Despite a world population of 40 million Scottish people, only 5.45 million Scots live in Scotland. The devolved Sturgeon Reich and its supporters says Scotland needs immigrants. What can it do to entice Scots back / discourage emigration ...get rid of the midgies... .... Left Scotland in 1982 and apart from the odd holiday...well...no reason to go back...too wet and cold and full of whiners

Left Scotland in 1982 and apart from the odd holiday...well...no reason to go back...too wet and cold and full of whiners Did you leave in order to prosper, or was there something you didn't like about living in Scotland? Do you think you'd have left if conditions had been better? Would you go back if conditions improved? ..cutting a long story short I came out of the military in Gillingham so settled where I dropped....the folks are teuchters from Banchory/Ballater but I was in boarding school in Dunblane (the old man was military as well so always moving round) so no real ties unfortunately. Lost track of friends and family as you do...ho hum....anyway I think if the wife wanted to go and live there I would give it a long think...she's a Kentish Maiden or something like that...Maid of Kent...made in Kent...?? I'm not into all this devolution malarchy its a con...pure and simple....I remember listening to Margot MacDonald back in the day and even at that age....even with the oil rush and the Corries and Andy Stewart (bless him) buoying up the debate thinking it was never going to work...and its even worse now with the SNP and all this Scottish Parliament crap!!! I mean Scotland's such a small country and having a bloody Parliament...it's just a colossal waste of money...a monument to whining.

Do you think their expectations are unrealistic?

Do you think their expectations are unrealistic? Im not getting this scotland is too wee argument. Perhaps its too wee in certain individuals colonised minds.
Scotland is bigger than independent nations like the republic of ireland or denmark. Has a comparable population to new zealand. Having a bloody parliament too ........my someone better tell the isle of man they shouldnt have one.
We are three fifths the size of englandshire , and england as we know is tiny , and could fit inside france five times over , but this never seems to be a barrier to englands independence .
Its a nonsensical argument of course.
Mind the thirteen american colonies were being told they were too wee too poor and too stupid to survive without the might of the then british empire, before they fought their way out and went on to become a world superpower?
I get the english and their wish to hold onto colonies and vassal states. Thats a given.
....but certain so called scotsmen running their country down never ceases to amaze me.

Tommo, you posted a rather depressing photo of Glasgow and inferred that it was a result of Westminster/England/Thatcher, can you elaborate on that? What particular law or policy that created the wilderness of Glasgow stemmed from the UK Government, and why didn't this policy or law result in Inverness or Lochmaben looking like Hiroshima.
I haven't visited Glasgow for quite some time, it looked ok to me when I passed through.

Do you think their expectations are unrealistic? ..good question...standard of living...how to reply...based on the South East of England I think its' subjective...I mean shit...I work in the financial sector in London so wages are a shit load higher than those...well almost anywhere else in the country I guess, however, the southeast is a shit show in terms of living conditions. I mean I've had enough of it and going to retire early as I've had it up to my tonsils with the Southeast of England...for the very reason that it is a craphole for living. Personally, I'd move back to Germany in a heart beat but with the kids and stuff, well that's just not going to work. I think the quality of life in Scotland would be an order of magnitude better based on what I've earned from living in the saaarf. Do I think the Scots should accept their situation...depends upon what they think their situation is I guess?? Do you mean devolution or separation of power? if so then personally yes I think they're kidding themselves if they think the answer to their prayers is devolution overseen by some bunch of invested twats havering away in Holyrood. Sure, clinging to some nationalistic dream of yer wee bit hill and glen sounds great, however, I think that the reality for those without the financial parachutes provided by the tax payers (those self same invested twats that call themselves MSPs) will be catastrophic...I mean I'm probably wrong but hey...it's just my thoughts. In terms of your comment about them "accept[ing] their situation" then no. Personally I think they should get rid of the Scottish Parliament - its a waste of time and money better spent on anything else than yet another superfluous layer of yet more Government. so..yeah...pick the bones out of that

I haven't visited Glasgow for quite some time, it looked ok to me when I passed through. Hiya om. That picutre was taken by the French photogrpaher raymond depardon , on behalf of the times newspaper , some 20 years before the scottish parliament reconvened. Depardon was commissioned by the times to photogrpah glasgow , but the pictures he took were regarded that horrific , they werent published at the time.
That was back in the good old days , as someone of your age will surely rememebr , when glasgow had a labour council , and a tory government prior to devolution. The picture is just to jog your memory om of why so many scots wanted devolution , or more importantly home rule.
As you are someone who is vastly concerned with the wellbeing of us scots , im sure you would agree we have come a long way from the dark days prior to devolution.
On that note om , im sure you will cheer this next subject up regarding scotlands health.....
I know om how fastidious you are in your study of scottish health , and im sure you will be the first to cheer on the scottish devolved governments efforts with minimum alcohol pricing , depsite unionists and your government being utterly against it in the first place.
Havent they done well om?

On the surface your extract above does look encouraging, however, I don't think that it encompasses the complete picture, whilst your addicts can no longer afford a can of Special Brew there are many entrepreneurs from Eastern Europe with other attractive options for them. Let us look at what the Government rather than the media have to say, www.gov.scot/policies/alcohol-and-drugs/

If the Scots are unhappy with their living conditions, it makes no sense at all to me that the answer would be to give up what little control they have over their own affairs. The answer, surely, is to take complete control of their own resources, income and expenditures. With 34% of the UK's natural resources, Scotland is not in a bad position. If anything, I wonder why so many of them hesitate to seize the day. No-one is going to take better care of your assets than you are. If the Scots had control of their currency, energy policy, foreign affairs, financial services, energy policy, employment law and industrial relations, immigration, asylum and visas, nationality and citizenship, taxation, trade and industry, defence and national security, they would do a better job of managing themselves than Westminster has done.

Not really - you have been taken in. Seems that minimum pricing is like Scottish shipbuilding... "To decide whether or not MUP ‘worked’, we need to look at the totality of the evidence. Is it plausible that a decline in alcohol sales of three per cent would lead to a 13 per cent reduction in deaths? (Even the three per cent reduction in sales is based on a counterfactual; the real figure is 1.1 per cent, and that doesn’t include cross-border sales.) Is it plausible that MUP would reduce the number of alcohol-related deaths without reducing the number of alcohol-related A & E admissions? Or the number of alcohol-related crimes, for that matter? The claim in this study doesn’t fit with the rest of the evidence."
Salvaging minimum pricing

Let us look at what the Government rather than the media have to say, www.gov.scot/policies/alcohol-and-drugs/Ok. Lets start of by saying the media in this case you refer to is the medical journal......the lancet.
Secondly , if you read the government link that you put on your post its says this....
so what you are trying to pass off consistently as snp/devolved government problems is of course long term problems from the bad old days when the tories and labour ran scotland via their viceroy scotland office.
I think the snp devolved government has done marvelous with what little resources they have. Of course it doesnt suit brit nats , scotland getting its act together.
The biggest factor in many health issues is of course poverty , and to fully deal with poverty , scotland needs independence.

Not really - you have been taken in. Seems that minimum pricing is like Scottish shipbuilding... you will forgive me if i take on board the evidence such as it is from medical experts .
“Minimum unit pricing was introduced to save lives, and this latest report shows it is doing just that,” said Dr Alastair MacGilchrist, the chair of expert clinician partnership at Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems.
Dr Sadie Boniface, the head of research at the Institute of Alcohol Studies and a visiting researcher at King’s College London, who was not involved with the study, said: “This is high-quality research using official data on deaths and hospitalisations, and the main finding of a 13% reduction in deaths from alcohol is highly significant, in both health and statistical terms.
Researchers from Public Health Scotland (PHS), the University of Glasgow and the University of Queensland, Australia, said there was a “significant” 13.4% reduction in the number of deaths wholly attributable to alcohol consumption compared with an estimate of the deaths that would have occurred had the legislation not been implemented.
Prof Daniel Mackay, professor of public health informatics at the University of Glasgow, said: “The methods we’ve used in this study allow us to be confident that the reduction in alcohol health harms we’ve shown is due to the introduction of MUP, rather than some other factor.”

Tell that to the government of your own country. Why does england need circa 850 plus lords in its upper chamber on top of the 650 in its commons? A tiny country making up a mere 40 % of the uk landmass , off the coast of europe , with the second largest legislature in the entire world.
Included in that is something like 26 bishops of england church , making england and iran the only two nations in the entire world with clerics in a legislature.
Before lecturing us scots about our own parliament , which 75% of scots voters supported by referendum , perhaps you should start the pruning in your own parliament first.
