EVERY major city in England carries moderate risk of ill health because of exhaust polution, and thats according to multiple different research programmes and institutions. According to the British Heart Foundation, one in every 20 deaths in Northampton is due to polution Other research says that everyone living in London inhales polution equivelant to smoking over 150 cigarettes per year. Policy must be based upon improving lives, and should be based on fact, its called "progressive" What is your measure of an improved life? What a parameters are you choosing? As a case in point we could improve 25,000 lives per year by banning cars and lorries outright and thus stopping several thousand deaths and many disablements as well as stopping the pollution. However that would worsen the lives of millions of people. So a policy for improving lives also worsens lives. Many actions to 'improve' have other counter improvement effects. It sounds like making people walk is progressive.

The Mayor of London is not wanting to ban all cars from London
He, and the London Assembley are wanting to ban cars which produce high levels of toxic emissions, and cars which give off low emissions will not be charged, neither will electric cars.
Why cannot people like you see common sense ? - its a policy which will clean up the air quality and the outcome will be better for the health of Londoners.

sidfiddler ... "Honestly, you anti Khan lot will come up with any rubbish to support your hatred of the London Mayor" jonksy ... "Who in their right mind would like the two faced self serving arsehole? He has done bugger all for Londonistan apart from drive it further into the mire he has manufactured" The second quotation proves the first quotation to be 100% correct, with more than a hint of racism added in The bloke is insane. Where did I mention anything racist in my comments? Did I mention colour? Nope I did not. He is just a self serving spiv who hates the English and their heritage.

You're the sort of person who will ignore thousands of winter deaths due to people being unable to afford unreliable and expensive renewable energy. But will be the first to demonstrate about one single summer death due to a warm summer. You're a joke. If you think this country is bad, fuck off to China, India, Russia, Indonesia and many other countries who are massive polluters and don't give a toss about net zero. Anyone who thinks this tiny country can make a global difference should stop smoking Jamaican Woodbines.

I think to a large extent you missed the point. An improvement comes at a cost in worsening the lives of others and some of those could be the very people whose lives you are trying to improve. It may lead directly to loss of employment, loss of businesses, the safety of children forced to walk to school in areas of danger, the increased accident rate in cyclists etc. Sometimes common sense is used as the basis for passing laws and enforcing policies that will lead to all sorts of hardships for others. It is always a balance.

Well you made a mess of that post sandypine, I reckon you might have drank more than me tonight, and I am on the Whisky But not sober enough to see that thousands do not die of a pollution eviroment in London per year. Now maybe if you had mentioned stabbings etc you may have been nearer the mark..

Well you made a mess of that post sandypine, I reckon you might have drank more than me tonight, and I am on the Whisky You like whisky. My fave tipple has always been Glenmorangie, but I'm currently sipping Gentleman Jack, it's a fad but it's delicious. I'll go back to Glenmorangie eventually, I always do.

According to the British Heart Foundation, one in every 20 deaths in Northampton is due to polution LINK please? Are you sure that it's not due to other types of pollution? Many cancers are caused by workplace pollution, asbestos, toxic chemicals, x-rays, solar radiation - skin cancers, smoking cigarettes - lung cancer / heart problems, drinking alcohol is associated with various tumours. All of these are pollution of a kind, but not exhaust pipes.

My tastes have changed as I have got older, I now love trying different Whiskys, I have one friend who likes Laphroaig, but then I have another friend from Glasgow who says that he keeps a bottle of Laphroaig in case someone calls who he doesn't like.

My dad was a biochemist with the Distillers Co Ltd and was on Whisky tasting panels and got four free bottles per year, my uncle was a distillery manager and here was me unable to drink the stuff. Gives me the bauk. I am largely teetotal with just occasional sherries, mulled wines or beers with dinner. My wife, whose father was an RN PO, is a big fan of Pussers rum and drinks it with a straight face.

Although years ago I visited Lossie on a few occasions and remember very well the selection whiskies on offer in a particular harbour bar were like nothing we ever saw in England, or anywhere else. That may have been the start of my lifelong love of malt whisky. And it must be said, I laughed out loud at the thought of Mrs Pine drinking Pussers with a straight face, lol.
