Fresh nightmare for Starmer as Reform UK wins yet another by-election in Labour heartland... Reform UK has swept to victory in Wolverhampton, beating Labour and the Tories in the Bilston North by-election. Nigel Farage's party snatched the Bilston North, Wolverhampton, ward from Labour - gaining 34.8% compared to second place Labour's 25.1% and the Greens 23.4%. The Conservatives won just 13.7% of the vote and the Liberal Democrats 2.9%, according to Britain Elects. Reform UK MP Lee Anderson said: "Reform Gain. The political tsunami continues. And more defections incoming. We will get our country back." www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1970216/reform-uk-wins-wolverhampton-by-electionExcellent news. Publicly I'm sure Labour will scoff, but behind closed doors Starmer will I'm sure be concerned about being the most unpopular prime minister of the most unpopular government in living memory. Cant wait for the locals in May.

Morning Red Genuine question - I'm not being partisan about it - do you genuinely believe that a true majority of the British people support the kind of libertarian, right-wing views of both the Britannia Unchained types and the Reform party? I certainly don't believe, for example, that a genuinely true majority of the British people actually support left-wing socialism OR right-wing libertarianism. Ergo, if you are a believer in democracy, then under no circumstances should either left-wing socialism OR right-wing libertarianism be granted access to the levers of power in this country. I'm sorry to say it, but in my view any uncompromising supporter of either left-wing socialism OR right-wing libertarianism is proposing that an ideology supported by a small minority of the electorate should be imposed on ALL the people of this country for their own good. That is fundamentally undemocratic and paves the way for totalitarianism. Edit: Spotted this on Twitter - sums it up: "Anyone still think that big majorities are a good thing? That they stabilise politics? They just give a party Carte Blanche. Get rid of the Tories but also get rid of FPTP. Collapse of the Tories will have schadenfreude, but we actually need a more balanced & complex parliament."If I may jump in... I was for some time as a younger man convinced that a small majority was a good thing. I held this opinion from comparing my earning power and disposable income in the dying days of Jim Callaghan's minority government propped up.by the Liberal Party's 'social compact' which in effect paralysed them and let me get on with my life, compared to Maggie Thatcher and Geoffrey Howe's 'budget of consolidation' that basically kicked everyone who worked to earn a living in tbe teeth, seeing as how she had put herself up on a platform of lowering taxes and giving you mote to spend on things... The problem of abolishing FPTP is all too evident in Wales, where a minority left wing labour party is wagged by the tail of uberMarxists who deem violence, bombing and arson acceptable ways to push their political doctrine on an unwilling electorate, and face zero opposition in a unicameral legislature. I fear abolishing FPTP will give Westminster a Knesset, a minority government at the beck and call of a flock of barking mad cultists...
