Some interesting points raised so far in this thread. 1. Whatever Lineker does, and however well he does it, he can easily be replaced by someone else. People didn't suddenly stop watching Top Gear when Clarkson& Co. departed. When Jonathan Ross left his roles were quickly filled by others.(Think Graham Norton, Claudia Winkleman). 2. The main point of my OP which nobody seems to have considered is that the BBC are going to get rid of 12 people who will probably have extreme difficulty finding another news presenting job. Lineker, on the other hand, would be welcomed with open arms by the likes of Sky. Whilst the unfortunate 12 probably have no secondary income streams, Lineker can always carry on advertising crisps. actually a lot did - Top Gear became a shadow of its former glory. Gary Linker is stale now and what's worse he uses his position more politically these days.
If Lineker is the best the BBC can do then it's pretty grim.
