People would watch MOTD if sir Greyson Perry was hosting it complete with frock . It’s the only way to watch the matches of the day..hence the title. You might have less viewers but the BBC could save money and maybe reduce the licence fee. No they wouldn't and no it isn't I watch the games I want to see on Sky, BT Sport, Amazon or MUP and record MOTD just to hear the analyses led by Lineker. But then I'm a lifelong football fan. Yes they would , probably not Grayson but another ex footballer . The other alternatives you posted were subscription channels .

Its the same when people moan about how much footballers get . They forget how much money they bring into the club by way of merchandise and that and sponsorship . Ffs. Football clubs are independent businesses . The BBC is an organisation that one is compelled to finance if you watch live television….🙄

Indeed they are subscription, people who are really interested in football tend to subscribe to live feed options. People that are not interested want highlights presented and discussed by a man they found in the pub.

Some interesting points raised so far in this thread. 1. Whatever Lineker does, and however well he does it, he can easily be replaced by someone else. People didn't suddenly stop watching Top Gear when Clarkson& Co. departed. When Jonathan Ross left his roles were quickly filled by others.(Think Graham Norton, Claudia Winkleman). 2. The main point of my OP which nobody seems to have considered is that the BBC are going to get rid of 12 people who will probably have extreme difficulty finding another news presenting job. Lineker, on the other hand, would be welcomed with open arms by the likes of Sky. Whilst the unfortunate 12 probably have no secondary income streams, Lineker can always carry on advertising crisps.

Iirc Top gear was sold all over the world and made the BBC a packet. If MOTD is sold abroad and makes the BBC a profit then I’ll accept that Lineker is paid what he is worth .
