Paupers. You should hear what the stars get on commercial channels. Most bbc "star" salaries are actually lower today, in real terms, than fifty years ago. The idea of £40kpa for the likes of Michael Parkinson and Alan Whicker were scandalous in their day, but even then they were lagging behind some of their ITV competitors. (Simon Dee was famously at odds with Bill Cotton over his fee. When he asked for a rise in his £250 per show fee because - he claimed - ITV were offering a thousand, Mr Cotton offered him a 20% CUT for "ingratitude". Dee walked, flopped on LWT, and was on the dole a few months later..)

Why on earth is left wing Lineker paid so much? Yes, but to be fair, he is giving almost 45% of it to the poor, via taxation. Which is great.

So, If Lineker defected do you think he would prosper outside the BBC? I'm sure he would. Given the amounts of money broadcasters pay for soccer rights, doubling or even tripling (and the rest - consider the payday Clarkson got for defecting to Amazon) someone's pay to front the coverage would be seen as money well spent for a headline-grabbing star signing. One of the main points people miss about the insane amounts of money offered by commercial broadcasters and the likes of streaming services is that the "value" of these signings lies not so much in how good they are at their job (I don't watch football, so I've never seen his work, but I'm sure Mr Lineker is at least highly competent) but how much publicity it will generate.

But does the BBC receive more revenue for using Lineker?

But does the BBC recurve more revenue for using Lineker? I've no idea. Depends on the resale value of his work. I'd guess there's sales and deals going on we don't generally think of.

Afaik the BBC doesn’t sell MOTD abroad and Im not sure that Lineker is involved in any work sold by the BBC. If the BBC doesn’t recurve more revenue by employing Lineker then they are wasting licence money. One might speculate that he is more of an asset to the BBC mindset than anything else.
