It would prevent re-offending, however.
Which releasing him on license won't.
He can't be released under licence, ever. Any future Home Secretary can do whatever they wish given the conditions and technology prevalent at the time. Its why in practice there is no difference between say a 30 year minimum time and a whole life sentence. This man's crimes are horrific and inexplicable and I can't imagine anyone would defend them for a moment. Personally I would never support Capital Punishment for reasons expressed many times, nor do I think any government will ever re-introduce it to this country.

I can't name one because it hasn't ever happened but I can name several who died in jail

Nobody roped ever repeat offended. It also saves the taxpayer a fortune.
In a case as clear cut as this, it's justified.
There was obviously the Barry George case which was about as watertight as a sponge, and a few other cases where murder convictions have been overturned.
So, whole life would have to be a consideration in less clear cut cases.
But in a case as clear as this.
Where's the case for keeping this bastard alive other than it being illegal to hang him?

He chose to take them, so he still needs hanging.

What an appalling case. What you both have said but we need to do more by looking for precursors and at the least warning people with children. We never get anything about the case on the news. You are never told why, just left wondering and thinking there is more to this that they will say.

Barry George was guilty. He got off on a technicality.

Case for convicting Barry George for murdering Jill Dando had more holes in it than a sieve.
Sure, the man's a weirdo and a stalker, definitely a cunt, but a murderer? Case not adequately made.

I wasn't defending him. That post of mine was about precursors we should also be looking at. I suggest the last thing in what was left of his mind as he was killing and raping was 'well at least they won't hang me' Hanging is no more effective than full life tariffs at preventing re-offending post conviction but as Enoch Powell argued, a factor that could well lead to acquittals of the guilty. IE hanging as an option actually makes further offending more likely.

Case for convicting Barry George for murdering Jill Dando had more holes in it than a sieve... No it didn't. George was acquitted on the basis of one piece of forensic evidence being deemed unsafe. And his claims for wrongful imprisonment were dismissed. Which tells its own story.

He's far from the only wrongfully convicted that has never been properly compensated.
