Pacifico is quite right. The UK Government could stop the boats overnight if it wished to. It chooses not to.

I suspect dappy's solution involves opening asylum reception centres on the continent and providing free passage to England for anyone who succeeds in registering a claim. At present that is somewhere around 95% of the 50,000 or so who made it under their own steam in 2022.
Under dappy's scheme it would be 95% of a different number. Does anyone believe it would be a smaller one?

What the British government can't stop is the boats and lorries that enter EU territory and when a an EU country manages to stop it they're threatened by the EU. Hungary is a perfect example and they'll be joined by more.

It's pointless blaming the French. From their perspective once a migrant boat casts off it ceases to be their responsibility or even their concern. If it weren't for the enticements (real or imaginary) that England presents to would-be migrants none of this would be happening (in their view). Apart from which this latest incident took place in English waters, not French. I disagree slightly, if the laden dinghy is in French waters the French are responsible for the safety of the passengers on board, if they reach our waters then we are responsible Whilst the French and we are looking out to sea, the alleged Asylum Seekers and Economic Migrants are still getting here in the backs of lorries, cars and vans, false papers to board a Ferry, Eurostar, legally visiting family and friends in the UK and never leaving, when we do find them they ask our Courts to let them stay Its an never ending story, been running longer than the show Mouse Trap

What law makes either country responsible for the safety of a vessel's passengers? That's the responsibility of the vessel's master, surely.

Maritime Law as far as I am aware no matter where a vessel in trouble is in even in International Waters no questions asked, there are no real qualified skippers on those rubbers boats , the nearest vessel to them goes to their assistance, as the UK Fishing Boat English Skipper did on hearing people were in the water he went straight to them and pulled them out of the water

Yes, I'm aware of the duty under International Maritime Law to at least attempt to rescue persons in distress on the High Seas, but that still doesn't make anyone other than the 'skipper' responsible for the safety of the people on his vessel. The onus for that did not pass to the skipper of the trawler when he decided to go to their rescue.

Health and Safety is a responsibility we all have even on dry land and certainly in the workplace shops pubs where ever people are, getting back on track.
As soon as that Skipper got those people out of the water onto his boat, yes he is responsible for their wellbeing to get them to safety which is the nearest Port if at all possible , as he is for his crew even when fishing and each individual crew member on board is also responsible for their own safety and his or her shipmates including the Skipper.

Stupid people win stupid prizes. For crying out loud! For what reason, have you paid a people smuggler under a false narrative and ended up in a cold sea from a boat not upto the job?
