Look on the bright side. You'll be able to use those extra hours in the lines at passport control making friends with other non-Europeans from Nigeria, Pakistan, Mongolia, Moldova and all sorts of other interesting places. Perhaps even striking up long-lasting holiday liaisons or romances. They only do it first time you visit. That's true, but you'll still be stuck in the same queue every time you arrive. Getting your passport stamped for a 90-day stay.
The UK is much more generous. Its foreign guests get a six-month stay (at least).

Friends are in Madeira at the moment, moaning about the miserable weather.

All across Spain. but Gran Canaria already has very strict limitations on building new holiday accommodation. Re Madeira, I've not been there. The thing that put us off was the unreliability of the weather. Though Gran Canaria is getting hotter every year and no longer a summer destination.

The Canaries are of course much further south and closer to Africa. A mixed blessing?

It might well be the case that the 50,000 migrants who turn up annually in the Canaries are, in the aggregate, 'mostly harmless' as far as the Canary Islands are concerned. Particularly since practically all of them get shipped off to mainland Spain.
But can the same be said for the almost 11 million tourists who turn up each year?
PS the largest cohort are Brits who make up 20% of the total, not Scandinavians.

Its a balancing act. The locals don't want more tourists but there economy depends on them. PS. Not in Gran Canaria. Its 59% Nordic
