linkIt's interesting that so many people are now intent on making benefits a "Lifestyle". The govt say that they have a record unemployment, but what they actually have is a record number of people who aren't applying for jobs for one reason or another. Before the pandemic there were about 3 million on Universal Credit, but now there are about 5.8 million. And the rates paid by UC are going up of course (inflation indexed). So it looks like what's happening is that people are weighing up how much they can get by working and how much they can get on benefits - and deciding there isn't much point in working any more. I'd say that means benefits are too high. What other explanation is there.

Certainly benefits are too high for those that choose not to go to work - the idea that sitting at home on your sofa is now an achievable career choice shows that something has gone wrong with the welfare system.

Mods: Is there any way that I can block a tiresome forum member? Some forums have this feature and it's very useful when people follow you around posting crap.

I'd say that means benefits are too high. What other explanation is there. My immediate thought was that covid and the lockdown have encouraged people to believe they can sit at home and no longer need to go to work, but the CEO of City and Guilds said: 'We can’t keep blaming the pandemic for the issues facing today’s youth'. Nearly one in 10 young people (227,000) not currently in employment or studying say they never intend to work a day in their life. Pampered gen Z who believe the world owes them a living? metro.co.uk/2022/12/07/one-in-10-young-people-dont-plan-on-working-in-their-lives-17896441/

We really need to know what proportion of 'young people' (what does that mean?) are 'not currently in work or studying'

I think the unwillingness to work from a small minority of people is as much a result of the insane cost of housing as much as a sign of laziness. Take off your housing benefits and you end up no better off if you have a job for a lot of people.

It might be something like this
Say 20% are severely overweight due to lockdowns and perhaps have things like IBS and the drugs don't work and can't see a job within their aptitude and health restrictions.
Say 30% still have COVID symptoms and without job experience can't find work.
Say 20% don't want to work and can make benefits work.
Say 10% have a disability and self esteem issues.
Still about 20% even I can't guess at yet without this type of breakdown how can you work out a strategy?

I don't think this is anything new.
There has always been young (and older) people who just sit at home. If their parents are dumb enough to allow it what can you do?
