www.independent.co.uk/news/barbados-reparations-slavery-britain-king-charles-b2433121.htmlKing Charles and Keir Starmer have faced renewed calls for Britain to pay slavery reparations which could far exceed £200 billion ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chgom) in Samoa from 21-26 October. A group of 15 Caribbean governments, as part of the Caribbean Community or ‘Caricom’ organisation, have all agreed to table reparations on the Chgom agenda when the group meets. All three candidates for the position of Commonwealth Secretary-General role have supported reparations for transatlantic slavery and colonialism. Earlier this month, Barbados’s prime minister met with King Charles at Buckingham Palace in London where she said they discussed the matter of reparations, and where she suggested a far higher figure. During a recent speech at a United Nations event, Mia Mottley raised the topic of reparations and said: “The numbers have been looked at and studied by many persons and the figures suggest a minimum of $5 trillion dollars, 4.9 to be precise, is what it would be if we were to be similarly compensated across the board today.” And the obvious? Well put simply if these countries had developed sophisticated naval and weapons technology while we were still using bows and arrows maybe we would be seeking reparation from them.

The monies for the slaves were paid to Africans. If reparations are due, this money should be transferred from Africa to the descendants of slaves.

The Prime Minister has pointed out that this topic is not on the agenda for the Commonwealth government summit.
I do wonder if there is still any relevance to The Commonwealth these days

Very naughty, the PM made specific promises about not intending to raise certain Taxes, and as far as I'm aware he has kept his word on this.

Well He did indeed make very specific promises He promised there would be no rise in taxes on working people And when the hike in Employers NI means working people can't get a pay rise, or as great a pay rise, because the money a variable to their employer to pay them had been robbed, or they can't afford tomosy more because the tax on doing so has been hiked, I hope you'll enjoy trying to pretend this wasn't a breach of the very specific pledge not to fuck with the taxes on working people. Personally, I'm enjoying watching you squirm because I know he's a lying shitbag'....

Some of them are actually quite intelligent and capable of putting a decent argument together, however much we may disagree with it. Some of them. But others.....oh dear. I have blocked four of them already. lol

Slavery in this context happened a long time ago,we owe nobody a brass farthing. If big ears wants to cough up he can with his money, the slave owners were compensated to the tune in equivalent today of around £16 billion. Perhaps they should track down their descendants and get them to pay. As someone else pointed out their fellow Africans were happy to sell their fellow Africans so all this it was the criminal whites did this is not true. Many whites in this country fared little better, kids up chimneys and down the mines and worked beyond their limits in mills. When we are all told to hang our heads in shame purely on the basis we are white why doesn’t anybody point out the obvious it was a small minority profited greatly pursue their descendants we owe nowt and have nothing to be ashamed of.

Remember he lied to those of us who were once in his party and we warned that his promises to the electorate could be no more readily relied upon. But he was given a free pass by the media when he lied to us because in doing so he was furthering the centrist establishmentarians' interests against the left. But it surprises me not one jot that appears to be lying to the country when it suits him.

No one alive in Britain today was culpable in slavery. No actual slave victims remain alive. We abolished slavery a long time ago. So we are not guilty today even if some of our ancestors were. If we start demanding reparations for the crimes of long dead ancestors where will it end? Should we demand reparations from the Scandinavian nations for the ravages of the Vikings? Should the people of Mongolia pay reparations for the ravages of Genghis Khan? Should the French pay reparations for the ravages of Napoleon? Or should we pay reparations to the French for the ravages wrought by us in the 100 years war? Perhaps we should pay reparations to Ireland for the potato famine? The problem with all these things and many more examples we could think of is that whilst guilt was genuine, it belonged to people now long dead. And the victims are also long dead. Reparations no longer serve any useful, credible, or reasonable purpose and would just be virtue signalling.

Reparations worked well at the end of WW1 didn’t they,it enabled Hitler and the Nazis.
If big ears and steamer push on with this nonsense you may see a real far right emerge here, our masters are stupid and learn nothing from history.

You are conflating the historic - slavery - with issues that are still current, eg racism and net zero. And shock horror, genuine left wingers do actually see racism and climate crisis as problems to be addressed.
