The problem with the high streets is not down to one factor yet several. Parking is a key factor. Business rates are another. Traffic and public transport yet another. Retail outlets are not perfect either, one near me with free parking means it can take over 30 mins to just get out of the car park. Yes and all these factors condense into one judgment where the punter sums up value for money. On the one hand you have the 'what I want' which is the value. That might be getting some exercise in going out, seeing interesting stuff rather than getting bored, find some good stuff to buy to improve your life and so on. Then one weighs all this up with the costs. You problems start by searching for one of those dingy eyesore multilevel car parks and then pay through the nose for it. Now just stopping here and looking at how that works out. You never see a shop charge customers an entrance fee, even though every proprietor is paying money to accommodate that shopper. The council may own the car park, but the council is already being paid business rates, so the car park should be part of the value the shops get for the money they pay. It's just psychology. You want as many people in that area as possible so you maximise sales and then you have the cash to pay your rates. In fact an often used marketing trick employs the reverse. They offer discounts on your first purchase so you get rewarded for taking the risk of trying their product. It's yet another example of thick Brits, but this time they are the council. The issue is simple to understand from a business perspective. They have priced themselves out of the market.

Food in Hong Kong was absolute shit ….and Brits eat a lot of meat . Hong Kong is pretty old and dilapidated compared to some of the modern cities. Besides the Chinese have a weird taste. They like it though.
Brits used to eat a lot of meat, but not anymore.
Old and dilapidated? What a crock of crap . Did your CCP friends tell you that? Many Cities in Europe might be old and dilapidated . Does that affect the taste of the food ? Brits still eat a lot of meat . You need to get out more .

You are a very rude person you know. Just because I don't agree with all you believe, does not give you the right to be so on the attack all the time. Now please grow up.

Is the food in the West end of London better than the food in the less affluent areas of Paris, Milan , Rome? Ok so pointing out how ridiculous posts are means I am rude and I need to grow up ? Why do you post stuff that shows you obviously have no idea what you are on about then get sniffy when this is pointed out ?

The food on the average UK high street is shit. Now lets start from there. What are you going to do about it?

The food on the average UK high street is no worse than the food in any other high street. Did you really just ask me what I am going to do about the food on UK high streets ? lol.

The real problem with our high streets is that I can most everything I want on the internet without getting up. Terrestrial shopping still appeals and I do like to go round to Waterstones and read all their books free and for nothing, but I suspect that sort of thing will soon be as one with the songs of yester year

Nonsense , Brick Lane East London some of the best Curry Houses, Gastro Pubs, all sorts of Cuisines from around the world Turkish, Greeks Oriental etc , same right across North London West London and South London. In the West End Knightsbridge etc you will pay more as properties are more expensive plus of course that is where the Luvvies go,

We frequently spend time in France — mostly south-west-ish of Paris in 78100 — and I can assure you the food shops and markets generally offer much better choice and quality of food than is usually available around UK places we shop (ie, London N16, Bromley, Sevenoaks, and Tunbridge Wells).
One thing noted is the cheapness of ready-meals in many UK supermarkets compared to making meals from fresh ingredient equivalents. God help the health of the UK population when so many cannot afford to buy and cook fresh food...
PS — plenty of good quality, reasonably-priced, seafood in France, but no Chippy...

@baron von lotsov
I agree for people to go shopping they look for quality or affordability and these two choices may be due to life circumstances.
People while out also often look for a bite to eat and again money will decide which venus they choose.

I wouldn't worry about the ready meals, the oldies love them and those working exec types who are in a rush to eat do too, though not the same brands. Always enough cooking programs on tv for those who want to learn. Worth mentioning disposable income will always be a factor on what people eat and affect their choices.
