There was a global crisis in 2000 when the dot com boom went bust and a global recession hit, but, for some reason we were unaffected (having a budget surplus helped). Gordon Brown boasted of his economic prowess and Labour called a snap election in 2001, which they won, but with a much reduced vote. Yes, Tory propaganda is really good. But New Labour were still in office for 13 years, and despite the wave of lying propaganda from the Tories and others, The Tory party couldn't win an outright majority in 2010.
