What about fixing all else? Its a bribe. Income cannot fall below a certain level, income support is there. I knew a social worker who said that when he got old he would be spent up, deliberately, so the government would look after him.
My ex wife spent money like water, with no thought for the future, she was fired, and it has merit, here i am being careful, born poor, having far more money than i could ever spend, thinking i should have spent more long ago.
The problem is that if the government managed money like i do, everyone would be rolling in it. So people have a great time spending all, getting into debt, then idiots come along and give them more. Way to go.

Keep it coming Rishi ,even the labout bloke is saying more for the pensioners which is great news . Paying a decent pension has to be factored into taxes and other spending .

I suspect the Labour policy makers are thinking of ways to get at the equity in property owned by pensioners . Any pensioners who have worked hard and done well will be targeted .The ex floor washes and the long time unemployed pensioners will ponce off those .

The most well-off, most protected group in our society with most disposable income are Pensioners.
Rich or poor, all pensioners get free bus travel Rich or poor, all pensioners get Winter Fuel Allowances
ONLY pensioners are guaranteed pension rises to keep up with inflation, regardless of the inflation rate, no one else in society has this guarantee, in fact nurses, doctors and most public sector workers had pay freezes when pensioners continued getting their generous pension rises.
Rich or poor, all pensioners get free prescriptions
Pensioners who recieve only the basic state pension can get help with rent and council tax
I personally hope that - IF - Labour become the governing party, both Winter Fuel Allowances and Free Bus Travel will be means tested, or eligibility to be based on an income scale.
Why should well-off, wealthy or rich older people get what is in effect state benefits often paid for by struggling families.
Its true that the Tories are attempting to buy the pensioner vote

Its true that the Tories are attempting to buy the pensioner vote They don’t . That’s a lie. Pensioners get 1 A state pension based on contributions. 2 A private pension base in their contributions. 3 Pension benefits base on income . 4 a few benefits not based on income. ie a bus pass that would be rarely used if the pensioner has a car, free prescriptions, a small winter fuel allowance , some non means tested benefits linked to health . The reality is that wealthy pensioners do not get state benefits that they did not contribute to. Leftie pensioner haters are Turkeys hoping for Xmas to come early .

Explain why a well off pensioner with perhaps a private income / pension, on top of the state pension, should have a pension rise in line with the inflation rate, when less well off families who are struggling have to endure either a pay cap, pay freeze or a pay rise below the inflation rate. ?

Because that pensioner paid in qualifying amount of NI . Basic state pensions are very low .

I agree with witchfinder - the Labour Party should go into the next election promising to means test pensions.
It's only fair.

Its true that the Tories are attempting to buy the pensioner vote I somehow doubt the millions of pensioners on basic pension see it like that, when they need to turn the heating or the tap or want the lights on, maybe still paying their rent, also when they know if they fall ill or so infirm anything they have will be taken by the state, in all honesty, there are a few here who fancy they are a cut above, those are not a representative as a whole.

I agree with witchfinder - the Labour Party should go into the next election promising to means test pensions. It's only fair. They should also say that as they aren't going to increase tax on ''working people''(if you believe that you must be stupid) they are going to treat non working welfare handouts (inc housing allowance /disability etc) as taxable income and above personal allowance it will be subject to income tax rates. That too would be fair

I agree with witchfinder - the Labour Party should go into the next election promising to means test pensions. It's only fair. Thats not what I said, and for the record I do not believe that the state pension should be means tested What should be means tested is all the other universal perks, such as the Winter Fuel Allowance, free bus travel and free prescriptions etc. No one can reasonably justify why a pensioner who perhaps has private pension(s), as well as the state pension, who has savings, who perhaps owns their own home, or who is well off or comfortable .. should be given from the taxpayer, a Winter fuel allowance. Especially bearing in mind that the least well off sections of society are struggling
