Only just watched it. Portugal looked so much more fluid without Ronaldo. And Switzerland looked to have used up all their energy in the group stage. Impressive scoreline but not a great match

Yes Spain were poor and at that moment thought Brazil would beat England in the final and then Portugal dropped Ronaldo and Cancelo and played total football.
Now think Porugal will win the WC providing they get past defensive Morocco.

They didn't look great against Switzerland and we've seen what Portugal just did to them. I think Argentina could beat Brazil.

Zero for three. Terrible penalties for Spain. African side in the last 8. Let's hope they have enough left in their legs for their next game. well done to morrocco monte , i stand corrected. Spain were terrible .

Neither have England. Thats been my point about this world cup , a large amount of teams havent been tested because of the poor quality of the entrants . There has been one blip in that golden rule where a poor spain team lost on penalties to a hyped up morocco in a regional derby.
The true tests start now in the quarter finals.

How do you fix it though Thomas? Can't really use the flawed FIFA rankings to just pick the top 32 teams. Qualifying rounds amongst groups of mixed regional teams would be impractical and too expensive for the less developed nations. European teams already have a disproportionate number of places in the finals. Let's take Italy for an example. They had the same opportunities to qualify as anyone else in Europe but they failed to qualify directly and couldn't progress via the playoffs either. Couldn't even beat Montenegro. Who is to say they'd have done any better than Germany or Uruguay if they had been given a place or been a better team than Japan, Senegal or Morocco? The long term future of the WC is better served by giving some of the underdog nations a chance to shine than by having off form teams from the old guard show up and embarrass themselves IMO.

Here we go then. Brasil against a team that will park the bus and try to score on the counter attack. Not likely to be such a goal fest this time.

If either Brazil or France wins the tournament then at least the other one doesn't. That would have to be be considered as a consolation.
