longshanks was a failure , because ultimately he failed to conquer the whole of scotland and incorporate us into his kingdom. Scotlands gereat strength was our mountainous landscape. Military historians call scotland the afghanistan of north west europe , and prior to Wades roads and modern technology much of our country was simply beyond the ability of invading armies to control.
Englands great weakness to me is southgates timidity. If 300 grand a week premier league players cant comfortably beat an african team who are without their best player then they should forget playing international football.
I like japan. They look good. The netherlands are poor , but england made the yanks look good in the group stage. I suppose anything can happen on the day though.
We did a better job than the Romans though and pushed the border North of their wall. Not really monte. A little known fact is that the romans actually had a line of forts along the edge of the highlands , before withdrawing to the antonine wall which runs through north glasgow , and then finally retreating to hadrians wall.
The reason the anglo saxon border was north of the wall is becasue the anglo saxons invaded Britain along east coast river valleys , rather then marching north overland.
Obviously the furthest north river valley they invaded was the tweed , where they founded the kingdom of bernicia which became later part of northumbria , then was later divided between scotland and england.
Back to the football , i see a poor quality yank team has now just been put out by the dutch. I think maybe im being a little unfair , i would say the yanks are more "workmanlike" , with a good player in pulisic, but overall severely lack quality needed at this level.
I stand by my comment the other day england , and southgates timidity made them look better than they actually are. Wasnt that yank goal against the dutch literally the flukiest goal in world cup history?

The usa doesnt take football , what they call soccer , seriously , perhaps a bit more serious than they used to to be fair.
If they did , as the worlds foremost economic and military superpower of some 330 million souls inhabiting a country with states bigger than the netherlands or even the yookay , they could possibly be world beaters.
My point is this isnt some sporting backwater struggling to compete against a european team . On the flip side though , they are currently a workmanlike team and performance without having the quality of the european teams.
Generally the knockout stages sort the wheat from the chaff

Yea I agree Thomas but It was nice to see the yanks and canaddian teams there .it should make for a intrerting 2026 world cup . when them nations hold it. |

I think that's an honorable result for the old septic tanks. Bloody Argies have just made it 2-0 against the former convicts too. I hope tomorrow night goes more how I want it too. |
