Almost everywhere I travel abroad household waste is not collected from your home, but from communal street bins.
This must be cheaper that our system, but obviously involves you taking your rubbish to those bins.
A: Should we adopt this here.
B: What other things could we do for ourselves to save money.

A. Given the scarcity and high value of building land, we seem to squeeze a house onto the smallest of plots, allocating areas as bin depots might be quite an ask. I can imagine that affluent areas might not welcome a nearby bin collective area, and in the rougher areas the bored kids would just set the bins on fire in the evenings ...... they would have been made good use of in Dublin last week !
Difficult to incorporate within many of Britain's terraced streets that are also hemmed in by roads, but quite a possibility to include in the planning of future residential areas I would have thought.
B. Stop paying the Television Licence Fee.

Where would these bins go in an already crowded London street? Would they be ULEZ compliant? Seriously, unless they are regularly emptied they stink and they're also a fire hazard.
It may be an advantage to flat dwellers who have nowhere to put wheelie bins.
I lived in Spain where these dumpsters were in use and found them excellent, however there were far more open spaces available, with bin areas already built into the infrastructure. They were abused by people not knowing bottles go in the bottle bin. Putting plastics in the general rubbish. Garden waste in the general rubbish. Then people think it's a dump and put mattresses out (usually at night).
In this country the system is not really broken, so maybe doesn't need fixing.

B. Stop paying the Television Licence Fee. Bins in Portugal are underground and are lifted out by special lorries, like this Might not be possible everywhere but in most places yes. Also a terraced street might have to take their rubbish further afield. Good idea but wouldn't save tax.

No, through renting I have seen this being abused though fortunately I got my own bins and had words. A friend at work living in flats with communal bins with kids found it a nightmare as others just clogged it up. On having central locations just look at the eco-banks where you take old paper and clothes and often they are overflowing. The current system may not be perfect yet it works for householders, flats though I expect are an ongoing issue.

A: Should we adopt this here. B: What other things could we do for ourselves to save money. A) Yes. I used communal dumpsters when I had a flat on L'Ile St Denis, and it involved no more effort than my current bin regime. B) On a personal level, stop subsidising those arts largely enjoyed by audiences who can well afford an extra few quid. It seems crazy to me that some of the highest arts subsidies go to companies like the ENO and Royal Ballet. B(b) Stop giving Ken Loach (and other filmmakers whose movies are almost guaranteed to lose money) taxpayer funds to make their films. Cinema is known as a "popular artform" - surely if it AIN'T "popular" enough to draw an audience, it shouldn't be down to the rest of us to keep it going.

I agree about communal bins in private flats, but that's because landlords provide them and get the cheapest service they can. As a business we are constantly chasing waste companies who 'forget' to collect our bins.

I wonder why they get the money. Hmm. Film subsidies might be solving themselves as cinema chains collapse with the growth of home cinema.

Communal bins already being rolled out in UK Excellent. Thank you for finding that. What else could we do? Fill our own streets pot holes?

Stop putting up illegal immigrants in 4 star hotels? Stop paying layabouts to pop out endless sprogs? Stop acting as a health service to the 3rd World?
All would save far more money than a few bins.

The system in Ely is that binmen open the lid of the wheely bin and check if the right rubbish is in there, ive been caught out a couple of times and got warning notices on my bin. This meant i took my rubbish in my car, in bags to the local rubbish tip which is brilliant, modern, in and out in five minutes a couple of times.
I could do this easily once a week and not have to bother with lorries, pay, pensions etc, and be charged horrendously. Fat chance of that. Of course i now sort my rubbish now, i make sure the top has the right rubbish, underneath is all sorts, they dont dig down.
It all gets dumped in the same spot anyway.

We have all sorts of different "Recycling" bins, yet there was an expose in the local free sheet a while back showing that the council sends it all to same incinerator.
Caught with their pants down there and yet the twunts want to fine us for putting rubbish in the "Wrong" bin.
They can sod right off.

Excellent. Thank you for finding that. What else could we do? Fill our own streets pot holes? Not allowed by the Council. Yes I know the rules would need to change. Could we do it?
