Why is the minister responsible for the armed forces called minister of defence? Minister of attack would often be more appropriate.

The Marketing men knew what was needed, you couldn't keep referring to the 'War Office' or the 'War Department', particularly once we'd given women the vote. Any focus group would report back that women want to be defended, but that they hate war ...... so the name change was a no brainer, and so successful I'd guess most of the rest of the Governments around the world have fallen in line and seen the advantage of a bit of Window dressing.
