As far as I can tell we have an ill-defined report from a think tank with some supportive words from a Tory Post election leadership candidate (if she hasn't lost her seat).

Lefty ‘snowflakes’ furious at Mordaunt over plans to bring back national serviceLefty snowflakes have erupted in fury over Penny Mordaunt’s plans to reintroduce national service in England. Users on social media reacted with disgust and anger at the proposals put forward by centre-right think tank Onward and backed by the leader of the House of Commons. According to the think tank reintroducing national service, which ended in the 1960s, could be a factor in helping tackle the UK’s “growing youth crisis” - linkClearly this is not 'national service' as many people will remember it. It's more of a National 'Youth' Service designed to instil a bit of discipline and self confidence I suppose, not a bad idea. Obviously lefty snowflakes and no doubt lefty human right lawyers will ensure it doesn't stand a chance of getting off the ground. The way I read it, what Mordaunt is proposing is a two week 'civic exploration trip' activity from which 16 year olds could opt out if they choose. It's in no way akin to national service, more like a camp, so I'm afraid you likely won't get the reaction you were hoping for from the left. |

Whether it's a good idea or a bad Idea is irrelevant. If the nasty Tories thought of it outraged lefties will criticise it. Is there any room for overlap in your world, Red? Or is everyone firmly in their left/right, black/white box? |
